Feature Request: Portfolio Admins Should Automatically Inherit Project Admin Permissions

Currently, users who are designated as admins at the Portfolio level do not automatically receive admin permissions for the projects within that portfolio. This creates a significant administrative burden, especially for organizations managing large portfolios with many projects and frequent membership changes.

Proposed Enhancement
When a user is granted Portfolio Admin access, they should automatically inherit Project Admin permissions for all projects assigned to that portfolio. Likewise, when new projects are added to the portfolio, Portfolio Admins should automatically receive the appropriate admin access to those projects.

Business Impact
Managing permissions manually across dozens or hundreds of projects is time-consuming and prone to errors. In my case, I spend countless hours regularly auditing, updating, and correcting project-level permissions for users who are already admins of the portfolio. This administrative overhead provides little value and creates unnecessary maintenance work.

Benefits

  • Reduces manual permission management and administrative workload.
  • Ensures consistent access across all projects within a portfolio.
  • Prevents situations where Portfolio Admins lack the permissions needed to manage projects they are responsible for overseeing.
  • Improves scalability for organizations with large project portfolios.
  • Reduces the risk of access-related errors and support requests.

Optional Consideration
To accommodate different organizational needs, this could be implemented as a configurable setting at the portfolio level (e.g., “Portfolio Admins automatically become Project Admins”), allowing administrators to enable or disable inheritance as needed.

This enhancement would significantly improve governance, reduce administrative effort, and create a more intuitive relationship between portfolio-level and project-level permissions.
