DATE - Custom Field Type

I’m in a trial period now , considering Asana … this just might be a deal breaker for me … I want to be able to group tasks by date … and have a date created column for each list view for my tasks

Come on !

I would echo that. Having the Date type as a custom field will help us track a lot of project activity.

We have been using for two months now. I am starting to find all the issues that I just can not stand. One being no custom date field… WHY? Another, why can I not add completed date column in my reports?! I have to export to CSV? Not user friendly at all. Will be looking for a new solution or go back to Monday.

Any ETA on this simple feature? Seems like it should be easy to implement.

We’re evaluating Asana and considering Monday as an alternative due to some chronic blindspots in this product. Appreciate any opinions or thoughts from others with more experience.

Hey @Marie - a year has passed since your reply. The custom date field - could really improve our project work - something is wrong with the prioritisation, because this seem like a “low hanging fruit”. My manager are considering moving out of Asana to something else because of this minor functionality and customization issues.

Hello. I am currently evaluating Asana as the team and project management tool for our company. I just learned that there is simply single field, due date, that is used to present both the planned date and the actual completion date. And if the task goes past the due date, you would have to change the due date in order to store the completion date - which erases the planned date.

This is… I mean, from the project management point of view this would be a disastrous method. Project manager would have no idea did the task completed in time as planned, or did go past its original planned date. You would have to have a second digital project for planned and budgeted time stamps for being able to compare what was planned and what is the reality. That would be unacceptable complicated.

So I would like to ask from devs, will there be the due date AND the completion date, or should we move on and continue our search? I would like to have an answer within a week, or I will take that the answer is no.

Every one want a date custom field

I am mystified that form questions can now be formatted as a date, AND can be mapped to custom fields, but only to due date or a plain text field! This doesn’t seem like it would be difficult…not everything is a due date, and in “normal” US date format (MM/DD/YYYY), sorting by a text field is useless. Right now we do YYYY/MM/DD, but it means all dates have to be entered manually and can’t be mapped from forms. Very frustrating.

“No” I guess?

I have taken the silence of devs (and the lack of customer support) as “no” as well and moved on. Thanks all and good luck with Asana.

Hey is this for real? Any Asana Pro wanna explain thinking behind this (don’t tell me make a subtask, because it adds considerable amount of work and it isn’t possible to include in one form)? it’s been 3 years!

Why one date? And why just the “due” date? What about the “do” date? As in when you plan to do something vs when it’s due? So many helpful use cases with something as simple as a date custom field

Thanks for reaching out @SusanT! this is a popular request in the forum so I’ve gone ahead and merged your post with DATE - Custom Field Type to centralize feedback.

Please oh please give us a date type field. This would be super helpful for ease of filling out and consistency of data as I work on a team with people across the planet.

Hello, I really need the ability to create a custom date field and I’m very surprised this capability isn’t already in Asana. I purchased the premium edition because of the custom field feature and the ability to add a start date. I’m tempted to get the business edition because of portfolios, but the lack of a custom field date makes me hesitate.
We want to track when a customer request was first requested so that we can compare it to the start date when it is turned into a project.

@Julie_Brown you can achieve what you are looking for by using a TEXT custom field and specifying how users should enter a date. A popular format is YYYY-MM-DD because when sorting this column alphabetically it puts the dates in chronological order.

If you go Business and this column is added to a Portfolio, you can dynamically sync to a Google Sheet through the export feature. Here you can reference the TEXT column and have it read in a true date format. This allows you to create a separate reference that automatically calculates the days between a project request date and start date. You could even conditionally format the results so you have visual indications of the time in between.

There is so much you can do through this dynamic integration. If you have other similar use cases, I would recommend the upgrade to Business!

This is not the right answer. Eliminate pain points for your customers. No one wants to train their org on specific date formats, and no one wants to type 10 characters every time they need to input a date.

Just allow DATE custom fields, and show a calendar for the user to pick the date. By the way, you should have this for task/subtask completion dates as well (in case the user is backfilling items completed in the past).

This should be simple and an easy win for Asana.

Or, what if we had the ability to rename system fields, in a particular project?

Still looking for this custom date field. After the dumpster fire 2020 was, maybe Asana could bring a little shine to 2021 by releasing this feature? LOL!

Hi Jerod, I’m sorry for the late reply. I am using a text custom field in the year month date format, but I would prefer to use a true date field.

I don’t have the option to upgrade to Business unfortunately, but thank you for the tip about it. I really want to use it specifically for the portfolios and goals - maybe next year

Thanks, Julie
