Dashboard for existing Project Templates (v2)

Thank you for the clarification. Do you know if it may be added back in in the future? I would be a wonderful if as a team we can streamline information across projects. That way anyone can easily pick up another person’s work by quickly glancing at the dashboard. Thank you.

To me, that’s the biggest hole that was left when we migrated from V1 to V2, so I hope it would be fixed!

Hi @Claudia_Ramos , when you duplicate a project you get several options to include. If you check the box for task due dates (screenshot below), these will copy over so no need add the dates again.

But of course these are not dynamic dates like in a project template, so they would likely get stuck in the past, sooner or later. So you would then need to go to the timeline view and:

  1. set dependency management options to ‘Maintain buffer’
  2. select all the tasks together (by zooming out)
  3. shift them all at once to your project start/end date

…which again, all this is not ideal but it is a workaround for the time being.
It’s usually a balance between deciding what is more important… dashboards or due dates? :person_shrugging:

Thank you so much. Yes I saw that, but we just have too many tasks to update manually.
Thank you again for your help.

Briefly describe (1-2 sentences) the Bug you’re experiencing: I have a project with a dashboard that I have customized. I have created a template off of that dashboard. When I create a project using the template, the dashboard is not customized in the same way as the seed template.

Steps to reproduce: Given that I have a project with custom sections, fields and dashboards
When I create a template off of that project
And then create a project using that template
Then the new project should have those same sections, fields and dashboards

Browser version: Firefox and Chrome latest (today Jul 27th)

What version of Asana are you using (Basic/Premium/Business/Enterprise)?
Basic

Upload screenshots below:

I found a lot of conflicting evidence whether this is supported. From my understanding, I saw that it was not supported in V1, then it was supported at V2 for a few months after launch, then rolled back, then released again later.

Welcome, @anon24445060,

I’ve merged your post into an existing thread where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button.

There’s also a workaround or two posted in that thread that could be of value until/if this feature becomes available.

Thanks,

Larry

It seems like we are still waiting on a solution for this then? Is there an easy way to copy a previous dashboard or set a certain dashboard configuration as the default?

Hi @Eli_McArthur , yes, you can if you duplicate a project.
See my solution, as noted above:

That’s not a solution (as several other members have noted above). This is does not generate dates correctly. The solution needs to either be tied to templates OR allow the Asana user the ability to create a default dashboard for their team (or similar).

I create a new monthly project from a template that is VERY tied to specific due dates. Every time I do this, the dashboard resets to whatever default settlings ASANA has. I then update the dashboard to show the reports that we want to see on this monthly project (same every month). As you can imagine, this is very tedious and it seems like there should be a simple solution. I’ll reiterate that the solution needs to either be tied to templates OR allow the Asana user the ability to create a default dashboard for their team (or similar). There may be other solutions, but duplicating the project is not an option given the need to generate very specific dates based on the project start date (as the template does).

I agree, this won’t be a solution for your case. This workaround works better than projects templates that do not contain any tasks with due dates. And I agree, Asana definitely needs to implement this feature by providing dashboard support in project templates!

Thank you for your input, I appreciate the reply.

When you duplicate a project it does not duplicate the Bundle. Big problem. When you create a project from a Template that includes the Bundle, it is all included in the project.

Hi @Cheryl_Isler , you’re absolutely right - this is a problem for those that use Bundles!
To be fair, when I wrote that workaround last year, Bundles were just released and I hadn’t discovered this issue yet. :person_shrugging:

I suggest you create a new topic for this in the Product Feedback category so that you and others can vote on.

I’ve posted something similar (but different) on Bundles: Bundle should be included in project when 'save as template'
