Daily Asana backup with service account

Looking to back up Asana daily using a 3rd party tool. We are an Enterprise customer (not +). We’ve tried a few different Asana backup “partners” and the issue is that they can only back up what the connected Asana user has access to. This means that not all projects get backed up (for instance, my Admin account purposely does not have access to HR or Executive projects). Based on the marketing material around Asana Service Accounts, one of the purposes is for backups so that the service account can access the entire workspace. However, none of the backup tools I’ve found support Service Accounts and end up having permission issues.

Asana Support said the only way to help is for us to get Enterprise+ and do data exports, but we do not want to build our own tool or do manual data exports. Is the marketing of Service Accounts just not accurate (it is the first feature listed here: https://help.asana.com/s/article/service-accounts)? Or have 3rd party tools just not adjusted yet to using Service Accounts?

Thanks

I’m really surprised none of the third-party backup tools you tried support Service Accounts. Backup is definitely a major reason for their existence.

Did you try ProBackup?

@Bastien_Siebman @lpb have any additional info on this?

Sorry, I’ve not personally used a third-party backups and find it surprising too if they don’t use service accounts.

Thanks,

Larry

I never thought of it, but indeed would assume some tools should allow for Service Accounts to be used. I can ask ProBackup founder on your behalf Eric if you want

I tried ProBackup and Fluentpro. If you know anyone at the upper levels that would be a great if you could ask about using Service Account tokens. The ProBackup sales person basically said “we’ll mention it to our roadmap team”.

I did just discover that Skyvia is letting me use a Service Account token, but they’re more of a data export/ETL tool. Their “backup” ends up being just a full export of every property into a CSV, which isn’t as streamlined as a true backup tool like Probackup.

Thanks

I just forwarded your question to the CEO

Hi @Eric_Hepinstall , with ProBackup we can set up your Asana backup through a Service account. This way all data will be backed across the organization.

I’ll send you a private message on this forum to move this forward.

@Bastien_Siebman thanks for referring us :folded_hands:
