create_task missing from Claude connector (MCP) as of today

Today Claude reported that it can’t create tasks anymore using Asana’s connector. Indeed, create_task tool is now listed as “app internal” so in contradiction to what the documentation says and what was working just yesterday I now can’t ask my AI assistant to create tasks for me which renders this integration almost useless. I hope this is a bug, not a decision!

I’m facing the same issue! Last week was working perfectly and now, nothing happens

This is a show stopped for all of my asana integration workflows. Please bring it back.
Not being able to create tasks via this tool, renders it useless.

Same issue here. The create_task tool stopped working today and is now listed as an “app-only tool”, which means it’s no longer accessible directly from Claude’s chat interface.

I spent a good amount of time troubleshooting — toggling the connector on and off, fully disconnecting and reconnecting the Asana integration — with no success. All other tools (read tasks, update tasks, delete tasks, add comments) continue to work fine, so the issue is specifically with task creation.

This is a significant regression. Creating tasks is one of the most fundamental use cases for this integration. Hoping the Asana team can confirm whether this was an intentional change or a bug, and restore the previous behavior as soon as possible

Hi everyone,

Today I noticed that the create_task MCP tool is no longer available in my MCP setup.

Until yesterday, I was using AI tools (specifically Claude Code) to open/create Asana tasks via the MCP, but as of today the create_task MCP tool has disappeared and I can’t trigger task creation from AI anymore.

Details:

  • Tool: create_task MCP tool

  • Context: Used via Claude Code

  • Issue: Tool no longer appears / is no longer available in the MCP

  • When it started: Today

Questions:

  1. Was create_task intentionally removed or deprecated from MCP?

  2. Is there a new or replacement MCP tool I should be using to create tasks from AI?

  3. Is there any configuration or migration step I might have missed that could cause this tool to disappear?

Any guidance or official update on the status of the create_task MCP tool would be greatly appreciated. I’d really like to restore the ability to open Asana tasks directly through my AI tools.

Thanks in advance!

Same problem here. Unable to create asana tasks from claude. We’d really appreciate it if this very basic functionality was restored as soon as possible. Thanks

Hi Everyone!
Thank you for flagging this problem and providing examples. This has been reported internally and is currently under investigation. I will be back with updates when possible.

Please keep us posted about any changes!

Just wondering if anyone has found any solutions? This is mission critical for our workflows, which we devoted significant resources to achieving.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for reporting this issue.

I’ve tried to reproduce the behavior and noticed an important distinction. Task creation works as expected when using the official Claude + Asana integration and Asana MCP v2. In those cases, I was able to create tasks successfully. For clarity: the official connector uses a tool called create_task_preview instead of create_task. While the naming can be confusing, this is an internal, more powerful tool that’s only available in the official integration.

However, when using a custom MCP connection in Claude with the Asana MCP v1 server, Claude is indeed unable to create tasks, as that tool is not available there.

With that in mind, could you please confirm whether you’re using the official Claude + Asana integration or a custom MCP connector?

As a reminder, Asana MCP v1 is in the process of being deprecated, as announced in the changelog post. While I agree this behavior isn’t expected, especially since full deprecation won’t happen until May 11, I strongly recommend switching to MCP v2 (or official connector), which is actively maintained and includes improved tooling and reliability.

Please let me know if this helps.

Best,
Dominik

Of course I was using the official Asana integration, not the “custom” one. BTW - creating tools with misleading names is a very bad practice when working with AIs as users, you need to then work around this with tool descriptions and prompts.

My personal workaround for now is to use Claude Desktop and this open source MCP server: roychri/mcp-server-asana - this is not ideal, but allowed me to continue working with my Claude projects where Asana use is important.

Hi Dominik,

Thanks for the context. We’re using the official Claude + Asana integration and recently updated to MCP V2. We’re running into a limitation with the create_task_preview tool. It doesn’t appear to support assigning new tasks to a specific project at creation time, which adds unnecessary friction to our workflow. Do you have a recommended workaround?

Hi All,

I first want to apologize for this issue.

In the process of updating our v2 set of tools, we inadvertently removed the asana_create_task tool from our v1 toolset. It should be back now. In Claude, I believe the tools will refresh with each session.

Separately, there has been an ongoing issue we are working through with Claude Code. Both Claude and Claude Code share MCP connections infrastructure / an Asana Connector. Certain Claude Code surfaces (like CLI) are not able to render an interactive interface, however they are still attempting to use interactive tools. This prevents Claude Code from creating tasks and projects right now.

We are working on the ability to detect whether or not the Claude interface supports interactivity and presenting the right tools accordingly. We expect to have that improvement over the next week. If you need an immediate workaround for this issue, you may be able to register your own MCP app / client and add the credentials with these instructions.

If you feel you are still experiencing the missing tool issue after starting a new session / removing the Asana Connector and reconnecting, can you let us know:

  • which tool and edition you are using (GPT, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, etc)
  • which surface you are using (web, Desktop app, CLI / terminal)
  • the Asana MCP URL in your configuration - the URL is not always shown, but you may be able to ask your assistant: “what URL does my Asana connector use?”

Sorry again for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience!

Hi @Michael_Lawrence2 , I think that’s pretty separate from the issue we’re discussing here, but it is something we are working on addressing right now!

Hi John,

I still see create_task in App-only section in my MCP settings and my Claude is unable to create tasks/subtasks in places I want it to create. Could you please take a look?

Hi @Iskandar_Mamasoliev,

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble creating tasks. The screenshot you shared is expected. We have an interactive tool for creating tasks which is only used by the MCP app.

Could you share these details to help us investigate your case?

  • which tool and edition you are using (GPT, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, etc)
  • which surface you are using (web, Desktop app, CLI / terminal)
  • the Asana MCP URL in your configuration - the URL is not always shown, but you may be able to ask your assistant: “what URL does my Asana connector use?”

I am in the exact same boat and have also already tried all of the previously mentioned fixes. I too have a broken workflow that was in heavy rollout phase. Please let us all return to work and repair or ré-add this critical feature. It makes the connector useful. Without it, really isn’t worth much.

I’m jumping in to share our current use case and get clarity on whether our previous workflow will be supported in the future.

Our Product Marketing team manages product launches in Notion, but the Brand Design team uses Asana for more granular control. With MCP v1, we used Claude Chat to parse Notion databases, identify Brand team assignments, and automatically create corresponding parent tasks and sub-tasks in Asana. This included a bi-directional sync to keep both tools updated.

Since the new create_task_preview does not currently support sub-task creation, this workflow is no longer functional. This requires our team to either manually duplicate parent- and sub-tasks or consider moving out of Asana—which isn’t ideal for our design process.

Looking forward to updates on how this will be resolved going forward.

Thank you!

Hi @Debbie_MacDuff

To help you get this sorted out, could you let me know if you are using our v1 toolset? If so, the ability to create tasks should be fully restored now, as mentioned in John Baldo’s recent post.

If you are still experiencing the missing tool issue after this update, we want to look into this immediately. Could you please reply with the following details?

  • The Asana MCP URL in your configuration: You can ask your AI assistant: “What URL does my Asana connector use?
  • Which tool and edition you are using: (e.g., GPT, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, etc.)
  • Which surface you are using: (e.g., web, Desktop app, CLI / terminal)

It is not working in “v2 toolset”. I tried to use the official connector in Claude.ai today AGAIN and it still reports “create task” as missing. Nothing changed.
