create_task missing from Claude connector (MCP) as of today

Wanted to post screenshots illustrating the issue but I can’t.

But here they are in the Pasteboard

Hey @Andrzej_Brandt I appreciate the screenshots. I can see you are on the v2 toolset. Can you disconnect then reconnect the Asana connector, then on a new chat, ask it to create a task. In the v2 toolset, the name of the tool for creating task is create_task_preview. When it calls this tool, it should display a UI with a preview of the task you wish to create.

OK, I did reload the tool but did not try a new thread.
Now, this does not solve the problem for me for two reasons:

  1. I have long running threads, I have a thread with Claude running since December
  2. This is worse than before. I do not want or need a UI, I do not want the generation by Claude to stop waiting for me to click anything, I want Claude to act as my assistant which means create tasks without bothering me with any UIs. In my view your current implementation is clearly rooted in outdated ideas about how people use AI assistants. Your UI is not as important anymore, I don’t want to see it as often, I want Claude to take care of the tasks for me in the background.

It is even worse:

For future task creation: The create_task_preview widget tool doesn’t support the parent parameter needed for subtasks. I should either:

  1. Use a different Asana tool that supports parent (if available)

  2. Create via the preview tool and immediately update with parent via update_tasks

  3. Note in my response that you’ll need to manually move it to JOBSEARCH subtask

(this is Claude)…

So, you took a perfectly good MCP and made it worse by sticking there your widget no one wants or needs and striping away the functions that allowed smooth management of subtasks in projects etc.

Please, really, think it over. I am getting tired of having to use Windows machine where I can run Claude Desktop with the community MCP which doesn’t have the problems you introduced. As I said: no one needs widgets, no one needs to see your UI in Claude.ai - if I need Asana UI I go Asana.

Create task functionality still doesn’t work for me, I’m on Claude desktop app, connector URL is https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp and my Asana is on desktop app too

Thank you for the updates.

Using Claude Code, I ended up building an MCP app for this, which isn’t ideal as I’d hope to use the built-in Asana functionality of Claude Code.

Thanks!

Hi,

Checking back in here. I realize there is frustration for those that don’t wish to use the task creation preview UI widget with v2. We’re working on some solutions to better meet your needs, and I expect to have an update sometime next week.

I want to clarify that the expected behavior right now in ChatGPT and Claude which support MCP apps / UI widgets is to only expose the UI preview flow. If you ask to create a task without preview it will say that it cannot. But it should be able to create a task through the UI.

If you find that you cannot create a task at all, please let us know what your prompt looks like (obviously without any sensitive details), so that we can investigate.

I appreciate your patience while we work through these updates.

I want to remind that Asana’s v1 MCP server is still operational. If you have access to add a custom connector in Claude or GPT, you should be able to access the previous set of tools at:
https://mcp.asana.com/mcp

Why do we have to use a potentially outdated version for something as basic as task creation?

This could have easily been an additional feature and every user could have chosen if they wanted the preview or not… Please bring back automatic task creation without preview. We have autonomous AI agents that cannot and should not wait for UI input…
