🎉 AI Connectors turn your conversations into coordinated work in Asana!

Hi Asana Community!

Asana AI connectors are the bridge between your big ideas and the work that brings them to life.

:rocket: We have an Asana Connector in ChatGPT available today, with an Asana for ChatGPT app coming soon. Asana also connects with go-to AI apps, like Copilot, Gemini, Claude, Quick Suite, and Le Chat.

What is the Asana Connector in ChatGPT?

Available today, the Asana Connector in ChatGPT allows you to work with your Asana tasks, subtasks, comments, due dates, and project details to create summaries, understand priorities, and prepare clear status updates

Use it for things like:

  1. “Tell me the current status of our launch project in Asana.”
  2. “Summarize all milestones due this week across our top programs and highlight any risks”
  3. “Show me all high-priority requests in our IT queue in Asana”

What is the Asana for ChatGPT app?

The Asana for ChatGPT app is coming soon and builds upon the functionality available today by providing Asana UI directly in the ChatGPT experience and allows you to take action in Asana, directly from ChatGPT. The images below highlight the Asana for ChatGPT app experience.

Use the app to create a task or an entire project based on your discussion with ChatGPT.

Edit the task name, assign tasks to team members, and modify due dates in ChatGPT.

You can monitor work progress by asking Asana and ChatGPT to summarize the status or identify blockers for a project and it will return a list of relevant tasks to drill down on.

How do I get started?

Hi @Sarah_Chiappetta, thanks for the update! I’m trying to set this up on my personal ChatGPT Plus account, but I seem to be stuck in a loop.

The Issue: I’ve installed the Asana app from the ChatGPT directory, and it shows the checkmark (Installed). However, it never appears in my “Enabled Apps” list in Settings, so I cannot activate it in chats.

When I go to the specific Asana app page inside ChatGPT, I see a “Start Chat” button and a gear icon, but clicking the gear doesn’t show the usual “Connected as [email]” status or a “Disconnect” option. It seems like the connection state is corrupted or incomplete.

Troubleshooting tried:

  • Hard refresh & clearing cache

  • Incognito window

  • Reinstalling from the directory (it just stays “Installed”)

Has anyone else seen this “half-connected” state? Is there a way to force a hard reset of the integration so I can try a fresh connection?

@SixteenLetters,

Yes, I’m seeing the exact same behavior. Something is definitely not right.

@John_Baldo @Mikhail_Melikhov @dbrdak maybe you can check on this?

Hi @Sixten_Grevesmühl, thanks for reaching out. “With half-connected”, do you mean there is a loading icon next to the Asana connector (see image below)?

If so, this means the connector is currently syncing and indexing data from your Asana instance. If there is a sizable amount of data, it will take some time to complete indexing. Once it’s completed, it should be available to you for data retrieval with Asana as the source.

Please let us know if this is the issue you were talking about and if not, feel free to reply here, and I’ll see how I can help.

I’m trying to use the Asana connector in my personal ChatGPT account, but it doesn’t seem to be working. The connector adds successfully, however there’s no way to configure it or actually use it afterward. This may be a bug affecting personal accounts.

@zhuoheng thanks for the reply! I mean to say that the Asana name and toggle don’t even appear in the ChatGPT Tools selector at all, after connecting the Asana app.

Additionally, in the “Apps” menu of ChatGPT, it Asana doesn’t show up next to the other connected Apps. Thus, there is no way to disconnect the Asana app on my side in order to try again.

See screenshots attached (while these specific screenshots are on mobile, desktop has the exact same issue)

I’m having the same issue. ChatGPT says Asana connected successfully, but Asana doesn’t appear in the list of available options when I’m composing a message. I’ve tried using the plus button and @-mentioning it, but it still doesn’t show up.

There’s no error message and no indication that anything is “indexing” (or still being set up). The only way I’ve found to disconnect Asana is through the Asana admin app permissions. I did that, reconnected Asana in ChatGPT, and the issue persists. I also waited a couple of days in case it resolved on its own, but no luck.

Same issue; also on a Plus account. I can add the connector, but it does nothing. It doesn’t appear in @ mentions, sources, or anywhere else.

Same issue here. Is there any fix for this?

Same problem for me

Thanks y’all for the excitements about the Asana connector. Bummed to see y’all ran into issues setting it up. My best guess for the issue is: a. You have successfully installed the Asana connector, and b. the connector is unavailable for at-mention in chats because it hasn’t completed syncing.

The best way to validate this is:

  1. Go to ChatGPT web > Settings > Apps
    1. Important note, this functionality is not available on ChatGPT mobile. If you’ve been using ChatGPT mobile and don’t find the Asana connector, I would suggest checking if you see it on ChatGPT web.
    2. The difference between web and mobile is on ChatGPT side, and we unfortunately cannot control it. But I hope my brief explainer (see the bottom of this post) can help clear up confusion.
  2. And see if syncing is still happening

The Asana connector is built by OpenAI using Asana’s third-party API, and we’re actively working with OpenAI to better understand and support them in fixing the syncing issues. I’ve just reached out to the OpenAI team earlier today as well to see if they have any updates with the sync taking so long, and will circle back with an update once I hear from them.

(The ChatGPT app - with UI - that’s currently coming soon is built entirely by Asana).

Difference between ChatGPT web and mobile re: apps installation

ChatGPT also has a slightly different pattern on mobile versus on web, and this may have caused the confusion with the setup status of the Asana connector:

For me, the Asana integration isn’t even visible under “Enabled Apps” in ChatGPT (despite being marked as connected under the apps tab in ChatGPT)

When I try to connect, right after I clock Allow in the Asana dialog to grant permission to ChatGPT, I see a brief orange banner at the top of the ChatGPT window:

Still not working for me after days, when I try to disconnect it to try again, it doesn’t even show up.

Still not working after 12 days of letting it sit.
From ChatGPT web interface:

  • Asana shows as connected in the Asana Apps directory page
-It does not show up in the Enabled Apps settings page
  • The sync status does not show up in either the apps directory Asana page or App settings

Tried:

  • looking in Desktop app
  • disconnecting and reconnecting from the Asana side
  • there is no option to disconnect from the ChatGPT side, but I confirmed it shows as disconnected after disabling from the Asana side
  • still not working after the above and reconnecting

Hello everyone, I wanted to circle back with some news: We recently graduated the Asana-built ChatGPT app to GA and it has been released to the ChatGPT app store (Click here for install).

The Asana-built ChatGPT app supports retrieving status updates, amongst other handy functionalities. If you previously encountered issues with the OpenAI-built synced connector, you can now replace it with the Asana-built ChatGPT app to retrieve statuses and create action items.

We are actively iterating on this ChatGPT app and if you have feedback, please drop it in this feedback form.

Thank you for your patience throughout all of this, and don’t hesitate to reply to this thread if you have any questions.

I was hoping to use the chatgpt asana connector to create a workflow where one person on the team can use chatgpt to create a task (from within the chatgpt conversation) and then another person on the team would be able to query asana and find that task (again from within a chatgpt conversation) and use chatgpt to organize / plan their work. I ran into some problems that appear to be limitations of the asana connector in chatgpt (assuming chatgpt’s own interpretation of events can be trusted):

  • chatgpt does not seem to be able to assign a project to a new task when creating a task, nor can it add an existing task to a project. it can create a new project with tasks attached but that’s it. this seems like a significant limitation.

  • chatgpt struggles to find tasks. for a simple query “show me the open tasks assigned to me in asana” it mostly misses, unless all the tasks are assigned to a project in which case it sometimes finds them. Given the challenges I had getting new tasks added to a project (mentioned above), this creates a significant barrier to this workflow.

  • chatgpt does not seem to be able to create subtasks. my plan was for the task assignee to work with chatgpt to plan the task, and have chatgpt create subtasks to track that plan (if needed). per chatgpt, it does not have this capability.

I’m excited about the possibilities here with the asana connector for chatgpt but unfortunately unless I’ve misconfigured something it’s not quite usable, at least for this (simple) workflow. FWIW I’m using chatgpt plus paired with asana personal.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Definitely heard you on this, and a very top of mind use case for us. This is an area that we recently started development for, and will let you know once we release this functionality.

Thanks for this feedback! This didn’t happen to us when we were testing but let us look into this. We need to run a few tests to discern if this may be our MCP tools issue or the foundation model issue. Stay tuned on this.

Noted. Will pass this feedback along to the team.

Thanks for the response, and for adding my feedback to this thread. To follow up on the querying challenges– it is inconsistent. Sometimes chat can find my tasks but mostly not. Just tried again with a task that has no project and chat is completely unable to find it. FWIW I have a free account on asana in case that might be a clue. I tried using search_tasks in the api explorer and got an error “Search is only available to premium users.” so i wonder if i need to upgrade to make this work. I was hoping to evaluate how well it worked for my needs before upgrading.
