I made a subtask under a task thinking it was part of that task. Turns out, my subtask is more work and bigger than the task it is under, but not big enough to be a project. It has a lot of notes in it I can’t afford to lose.
Welcome to the Asana Community Forum @Shandra_Plourde!
You can change a subtask to a task following these steps:
I hope that helps
We really need an option to do this while inside the board view, the options require switching to list view and then finding the task again. Theres already a “Convert to” menu under the 3 dot button when inside the board view. But it only gives you the option to convert it to another subtask, or to a project. Simply adding a third option to convert to task in the current project is what is needed.
Can you please push this up to someone to try get this added soon? This has been a frequent complaint now for years, and its making using the board view very frustrating and cumbersome
I think we also need an option to multi-select subtasks and convert them to tasks. Right now, the only option is to convert to subtask or project.
To level up even more, it would be great if we could select the task and the related subtasks, and convert the task to a section and the subtasks to tasks under that section. I’ve found in several projects I’m working in that we have over a dozen subtasks, and at that point they should be treated as sections/tasks.
Hi there! When I drag a subtask out from a task, it doesn’t do this, “it appears both in the section and as a subtask under the original parent task,” which is what I want it to do. How do I keep the subtask/parent task relationship when dragging out a subtask?
This doesn’t work for me at all. When I click on a “subtask” and hover, the 6 dots do not appear. However, when I click on a project task and hover, I can see the 6 dots. Thus I can move “Project tasks”, but I cannot move “subtasks”. Is this a bug? It certainly seems problematic.
Welcome, @Chas_Jones1,
That’s operating as intended.
To move subtasks, you must do that from the task detail pane.
Thanks,
Larry
This doesn’t work for me. On the subtask detail pane there is no option to convert to task.
Interestingly, I can convert to Subtask (but this is already a subtask).

Welcome, @DC_AFP,
Did you try these instructions:

Yep, this is pretty much how Trello converts subtasks to tasks, and it’s been that way for years. Please, Asana, make this happen!
