+1 for this option. My users are asking how and when I show them the migration video they are like what? This should be a feature and it has been asked for since October 2021. It should be as simple as changing the static view within the edit field popup in the upper right corner to a drop down to be able to change the field type.
How depressing to find this almost 4.5 years later and it’s still not available…

How is this still not implemented in 2026? It’s a basic feature of many databases, Airtable provides the best example of managing data.

I’ve got over 1000 tasks, with subtasks, with a value assigned. We want to switch to a multi-select value, but now I need to recreate the entire field. The real kicker is - Asana doesn’t offer a great way to copy data across from one field to another. I tried using Rules to do this, but even then I can only do it in 50 ticket batches (because you can’t execute a rule against an entire list of tasks in a project), AND even then it doesn’t work for all the subtasks - it only seems to copy them for some subtasks and not others. This is extremely poor UX.

My team uses a custom field to track vendors on our projects. Recently, we created a Master Vendor Sheet that links to a live list of tasks associated with each vendor. It has become an incredibly valuable resource because it allows us to quickly see when a vendor was last used and what projects they supported.
The challenge we’re running into is that our Vendor field is currently a single-select field. While that worked well initially, many of our projects involve multiple vendors. As a result, when we generate these vendor-specific task lists, some vendor activity is missed because only one vendor can be selected per task.
I would love the ability to convert an existing single-select custom field into a multi-select custom field without having to recreate the field and manually update historical data. This would make vendor tracking significantly more accurate and useful.
As a separate piece of feedback, I would also love additional sorting options for live task lists. Specifically, when sorting by due date, I would like the ability to sort in ascending order (newest/upcoming first) rather than having the oldest tasks appear at the top by default.
