Anyone have any knowledge of how to make sure that rules generate subtasks in a set order? I have a rule creating 40 subtasks, and it seems to be creating them in a random order each time the rule is run.
Are all of your subtasks being created within one rule action, or in multiple actions within a rule (or multiple rules)?
We have this issue as well. We can’t drag rules around, so im not sure how to have the Rules section create subtasks in a particular order. We have multiple rules, each in their own rule action
did anyone find a solution for this?
We now have the ability to drag rules up/down in the list to change the order and Asana release notes (March 2026) say: “(Starter) Reorder rules: Reorder rules in the customize menu for more control over display and execution order.” Full Mar. 2026 release notes
Here’s a post I just added to another thread that may be a helpful idea for giving you more control: Allow user to define a specific order of rule execution - #26 by Elizabeth_Lumsden
This is great but doesn’t address the issue of reordering subtasks that are created when a rule runs!
I found this thread from the title, “Change the order in which subtasks are generated by rules.” I was addressing that specifically. I have found that I don’t need to reorder the subtasks after the rules run when I have designed the rules to generate them in the order I want.
Actually, that feature was documented incorrectly then subsequently corrected to:
There was no change to affect rule execution order, which remains unpredictable.
The approach you’re following in your linked post is the workaround, or a simpler approach with Sections or custom task types instead of the custom field as the gating factor.
Thanks,
