Auto-shifting dates for dependent tasks when dates changed in list/board view.

All of this. Workarounds are okay, but I’m becoming hesitant about endorsing a program to my colleagues that requires another subscription for basic use cases.

I don’t understand why this isn’t a basic function? Why do I need a third party program and subscription to have my dates auto adjust based on dependencies? What is the point of dependencies if they don’t do anything other than draw a line between each other. The timeline view is nice to show people, but I do most of my work from list and/or block views. Adjustments to dates in those should have the same impact as adjustments in timeline view. Along with that add durations. Please

Hi all
Can you do a roll-back to having auto-shift for dependent tasks not only in timeline view?
apparently it was like that back then: Auto-shifting dependency dates is now available on all projects! - #13

Right now I’ve several people re-assigning deadlines in the list but not having an impact on the dependent task…

I did not know this was working everywhere in 2019  I believe they are planning on having it come back, I don’t have any specifics.

Agreed. I do all of my work in list view. Timeline simply comes down to a visual aid to show people for me.

The “all views” capability referred to in that other thread was only available for a few weeks when they first rolled the feature out, before they limited it to the timeline view.

I’m merging this topic with another existing thread for the same request.

It is such a shame it is limited to timeline only.
Some real basic features missing that would make such massive impact.

Adding my vote for this feature. This would drive more of my teams members to actively use and update their project plans in Asana.

Please add this feature - I am constantly spending time and effort on manually changing dates - this would be life changing!

Hey all. I am having some issues where tasks aren’t auto-shifting when milestones get rescheduled in the list view but do in the timeline view. Does auto shifting not work in list view?

That’s right, @Corey_Protin, it currently only shifts when you’re in Timeline view.

I’ve merged your post with an existing thread; you can go to the top here and vote for this.

Thanks,

Larry

Thanks for informing me of the thread above where auto-shifting doesn’t work in the list view; however, our users are having trouble loading the timeline view (looks like it’s related to this thread here: Timeline only loads after scrolling (project with 300+ tasks and 30+ sections)). Have there been any updates here on this since '21?

We’re in a tough spot right now because auto-scheduling doesn’t work in the list view, but we can’t open the timeline view where it does work. These issues together defeat the purpose of using Asana for us in the first place.

Any suggestions?

I’m sorry to hear that, @Corey_Protin,

I’m afraid I don’t have any more info than that thread provides and unaware of anything after 2021.

Did you try the workarounds proposed in several posts in that thread? Any way to split off any of the content (tasks) to a separate project (I know it’s a hassle but perhaps the best approach to enable continued use of Timeline view).

And I would encourage you to email support@asana.com and see if they have any updates or new info; I think they’d be the best source since it seems like other customers may be running into this too.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful,

Larry

Yeah. We did notice a slight Improvement, but not a fix. We also noticed that the timeline view loads from bottom to top, making it more difficult for users to reach the Milestones listed at the top. I did reach out via support but have yet to receive an answer. Our template has a lot of tied dependencies and sections to strike a balance between a visual organization in the list view and auto-scheduling functionality in the timeline view. We’re trying to keep all related project tasks in a singular project to prevent depart siloing. Carving off tasks is possible, but it wouldn’t be preferred.

The most insidious issue with the list view not working with dependencies is that when a user shifts a date past a dependency in the list view, it will then remain stuck in the timeline view. This means one unintended mistake in the list view means a long cleanup operation in the timeline view to bring auto-shifting functionality back to the project (if that makes sense).

@Corey_Protin,

Sorry, this must be frustrating.

If you don’t receive an answer from Support in a couple more days, perhaps ping Marie here.

If it’s an option, Flowsana.net (@Phil_Seeman) would provide a solution and it’s very reasonably priced…until/if Asana fixes the problem.

I’m not clear if you really need the Timeline view otherwise, or just for date-shifting. If the latter, then Flowsana would be enough. If the former, I wonder if Instagantt (sorry, another paid third-party app) could help.

Not absolving Asana of fixing bugs, just offering possible options.

Thanks,

Larry

Thanks to everyone involved in this thread for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I’m excited to share that we’re adding our auto-shift feature for dependencies’ due dates, to all project views.

Note that in the List, Calendar, and Board views, you can review updates that will automatically be made on dependant tasks’ due dates, and you will be asked to approve them before the automation kicks off (see GiF below).

ADDA Board and calendar view take 4

This ensures you realize the impact of your update before taking any action.

For additional information on this new feature, we recommend checking out this brand-new article from our Help Center.

Please note this update will roll out to 10% of our Premium, Business, and Enterprise customers later today. And it will become available to all eligible customers by the end of this week.

This is phenomenal @Marie !! We’d love to be in the chosen 10%! :grinning: Looking forward to testing the feature and seeing how it works with large dependency trees.
