At this time, upon completing a recurring task, repeating tasks get auto-populated to your “Recently Assigned” section. I currently have sections set up based on when they need to be completed and some tasks in those sections are repeated tasks. Every time I complete a task, I need to shift the task back to the appropriate section from the “Recently Assigned” section. I think it would make more sense for recurring tasks to auto-populate in the section they were in at the time of completion.

Agreed. I think this behavior is an after-effect of deprecating the default “Mark for…” sections (Today, Upcoming, Later). For users that continue to use sections in the same time-oriented approach, recurring tasks should continue to recur in the “Recently Assigned” section.
However, for those of us who are using My Tasks in board view for other organization, this behavior doesn’t necessarily make sense.
Perhaps there should be a setting option for each user’s My Tasks to have recurring tasks populate in the same section or to Recently Assigned.
