I have an Asana template that contains rules to dynamically create tasks based on other tasks being completed. However, I cannot figure out how to assign those dynamically created tasks to the Project Owner. I can get it to work when I a add a rule to the project manually AFTER it gets created, but cannot get that same rule to work within the template.
@Clyde_Passman - awesome question!
There are two ways you can do this:
-
Use Asana AI: Use “variable assignee - Use AI” in your Assign action - I tested this just now and AI will tell you that it can’t do it but it can. It worked on these two test tasks:
-
with a script action (natively, but Enterprise only)
-
or with Zapier/Make/etc. (third-party automation platforms)
I’d also say I’m very hopeful that at some point the native rule actions, but Asana AI actions are a ready and available short-term solution.
Great idea and good luck with this!

I ignored the AI error and published the rule anyway…and it worked! Thanks for your assistance and response. I will keep you in mind for future needs.
