Asana rule creating duplicate subtasks

Hey everyone,

I’m running into a persistent issue with Asana rules and could really use some advice from the community.

The Situation:
I’ve set up a rule that triggers when a task’s “Task Type” is changed (e.g., to “Email,” “Social,” “Graphic Design,” etc.). The action is supposed to:
→ Create a specific subtask (depending on the task type)
→ Add that subtask to the appropriate project board (like the Email Board, Social Board, etc.)

The Problem:
Whenever the rule triggers, it creates multiple identical subtasks instead of just one. I just want one subtask per task type selected so they can be linked to additional boards that correlate to the subtask.

My Questions:

  • Has anyone else run into this issue with Asana rules firing multiple times?
  • Are there best practices for avoiding duplicate actions with rules?
  • Does this sound like a bug, or is there a workaround I could try?
  • Any insights, advice, or troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome, @Alyssa_Podevin,

This should be avoidable.

You can look the rule history:

for possible clues.

Check when rules were last run; maybe some rules are firing that you didn’t expect were firing. Pause those roles and see if the issue goes away.

And maybe the Activity tab at the bottom of the subtasks–look there and expand any collapsed info there to look for clues.

If those don’t work, add screenshots here that show all the rule details, but that might be impractical if you have a lot of rules. (Perhaps pause as many rules as possible, including rules in projects in which tasks might be multi-homed, or test on non-multi-homed tasks, to reduce what needs to be conveyed.

Thanks,

Larry
