Are the goals linked to the tasks in Asana - or are these like 2 parallel ‘systems’ - that means I can’t copy or link the task to a new goal?

Great question! As it often takes working on many tasks and projects to complete a Goal, it is not possible to link a Goal to a single task at this time. 
I will keep you posted however if any changes are made to this feature!
Among the metadata for a Goal are Supporting Work and Description.
Supporting Work is where you can link a Goal to one or more Projects or Portfolios (but not Tasks).
But in the Goal Description, you can certainly @reference one or more Tasks directly. Perhaps that provides you a workaround.
