Archive a Section in a Project

Would really love to have this feature. Empty sections are cluttering up our boards and it’s making Asana very difficult and messy for our team to use.

Good day - We’ve encountered the blocker as well - Completing tasks hides them from a Section and we’ve got obsolete sections that we want to remove but we don’t want to delete the tasks completed under that section.

Is there no easy work around available yet?

I can feel you, we have weekly section and it has been months. Hoping to see the light one day so I can archive unused sections!

We’re having the same issue. We want the ability to archive the section once all tasks are complete within it. This is probably the #1 issue in Asana right now. Please fix this!

Asana managers, please add this feature. It’s counterintuitive to have a task management system that doesn’t allow you to manage your tasks effectively.

I would love the ability to archive or mark as “old” tasks within a project. Often we need to pivot, and an “old” section of the project plan becomes outdated. We want to preserve the original timeline for historical purposes, but the tasks are no longer relevant. Would be great to have a way to archive sections/tasks within a project to preserve that history but not impact % past due etc when reporting on project status.

Hi @Whitney, thanks for reaching out and sharing your feedback with us! We already have a thread about this topic: Archive a Section in a Project . In order to consolidate feedback, I’ve merged your post with the main thread. I’ll make sure to post an update as soon as I have it!

Hi All,
I thought of another workaround to overcome the inability to hide or archive sections. The idea is to create a second project which is a filtered view of the first project without the unwanted empty sections.
Example as follows:
Let’s assume you have a project (Work) containing a number of sections and tasks for which some of the sections contain tasks that are all completed.

  1. Create a new project called Work Filtered and create only the same sections in Work Filtered that you wish to have displayed (typically the sections containing at least one open task in Work). There’s probably an automated way to do this by duplicating the project and deleting all the tasks or saving Work as a template and creating Work Filtered from that, in both cases deleting only the sections from Work Filtered that you don’t want to be displayed.

  2. Switch to Work Project and set the view to display incomplete tasks only.

  3. Work through each open task in the Work project and add a second project (Tab+P), selecting Work Filtered and the relevant section from the drop-down menu.

  4. Viewing the same tasks from the Work Filtered project now displays on the sections of interest since only a subset of the Work tasks are also assigned to the Work Filtered project.

  • When adding new tasks, always be sure to add them to both projects
  • When completing a task, remember also to remove it from the Work Filtered project.
  • If all tasks under a particular section in have been closed, simply delete the section from the Work Filtered project. This won’t affect the sections in the Work Project since the sections are specific to each project but the tasks in in this case are members of both.

Hope this helps,

Robin

I forgot to mention, it is not necessary to edit existing open tasks in Work one by one to add them to the second project. All tasks within a section can be selected (up to 50 tasks) and collectively added to the second project/section from the pop-up bar that appears at the bottom of the screen. After selecting the multiple tasks, click on the clipboard icon Edit project or section and then select Work Filtered and the same section from the drop-down list.

If this workaround is successful for many use cases, perhaps the ASANA developers can write a script to automate this method to allow people to hide or achieve sections from a simple menu option (?)

Feature request: It can be very cluttered in a project when a Section is complete but still remains in the project with no tasks left in it. Would be nice to be able to archive it with other tasks once the section tasks are completed.

I run all of my projects with Asana (thank you!).

You can delete sections and add new sections, but I can’t archive a section.

Please consider adding “archive” to a section. I don’t want to delete the section once I complete it because the tasks contain important reference information, however, I don’t need to have it in my active view.

Hi @LP11, welcome to the Asana Community Forum and thanks for sharing your feedback with us! We already have a thread in our product feedback category on this topic so I’ve gone ahead and merged your thread with Archive a Section in a Project to centralize feedback.

I’d love to see the archive a section tool as well! Thanks!

I would also like the ability to mark a section complete or archived once more. We are a weekly newspaper and use the sections for each week’s tasks. In order to avoid losing all the information in the section (stories run, etc.) that we may need to reference again, we’ve taken to dragging past weeks sections to the bottom of the list and renaming it for that week’s paper. Not the greatest solution and somewhat time consuming. I also liked having the ability to put a description in the section header.

I am starting a discussion around creating a tool to archive a section → A tool to archive a section? make sure to contribute so I can gauge interest and hopefully get that done.

Feature voted too! This would work brilliantly for projects that have a long life before delivery!

I haven’t read the full thread yet, but just in case, what would be good is at least be able to mark a section complete and when I filter the project to ‘incomplete tasks’ the section gets hidden completely. It helps during stand ups and project reporting.

Any news about this feature? This is a must have.
I would like to do both: archive and complete a section. Even “Hide” a section would be helpful. With old sections it’s impossible to use the board view - that I prefer, but as I told, it’s impossible. Keep moving the current sections to the top to have a better view from board is annoying as well.
Hopefully we will get this feature soon.

Instead of worrying about consolidating the request…maybe a fix is in order?

Any Fix on this Yet? Asana? Please…

Hello @Anshad_K
Welcome to the forum!
This feature has not yet been developed. However, if you are able o use rules, there is an easy workaround. You can create a rule and move all completed tasks to another private project and file it.

Here is the link to asana guide on how to use rules. Meanwhile, please make sure you upvote this request and hopefully asana will develop it soon
