Allowing the ability to add selections to a single or multi-select custom field when filling out task details.

I have found a few instances where it would be nice if a single select or multiple select custom field and could have new selections added while filling out a task.

For example; If we have a project list and we are tracking the vendors we work with and one of my coworkers start to work with a new Vendor, then while adding a new task they could type in their name in that field on the task, and it could be added as a selection for future tasks
Example #2; if we have a list of sites we support and need to add a new one, then we could do it while filling out the task details and now it allows us to select that site for future tasks.

I think this would be helpful for items where we might use the same entry for multiple tasks, like a site name. Right now we manage our Sites field as a text entry field, which could be prone to spelling issues or abbreviations for the same site. The downside I could see is that field list getting pretty long, but being able to filter the options as you type is pretty nice.

This might be a rights issue in either the field or the project. My team adds new selections to single- and multi-select fields in tasks all the time using the “Edit options” at the bottom of the list:

I knew we could add them that way, but I wasn’t sure what level of user/permissions my group needed to be able to do that. I am an admin for our group so I can see that option. I will see if my team is able to edit the options that way as well.
Thanks Leigh.

I guess to add to this thought, I was thinking that options could be added to the field even if the person wasn’t in the Task List view.

Oh, I think I see. Are you using forms to add new tasks? It could definitely be useful to have a setting in the form to allow field additions, though I can also see downsides to it if a form relies heavily on branching or is primarily filled out by someone outside of a trusted team.

Correct. Using forms, or my group uses the task shortcut shift + control + “+”
