Add Duration to task

Currently, Asana can enter Start date and Due date for a task.

As an alternative, I would like to be able to enter a Duration for a task.

And I guess you want those 3 fields (start, due, duration) to evolve together automatically?

Like Flowsana does? :joy:

There was a similar suggestion (I remember seeing it before).

I’m thinking of giving it a try, but setting up the system is a hassle.

Hi @ka_nishiyama,

I’m not sure what you’re having issues with but please don’t hesitate to contact us for support, we’re happy to help.

There are two reasons why I don’t use Flowsana:

  • It costs money in addition to Asana.
  • To use an app other than Asana, i need permission from my organization, which is not easily granted.

Ah OK thanks for the clarification @ka_nishiyama - not Flowsana technical issues per se…

It may not be the cleanest solution, but if you use the Gantt view, it provides a system duration field in days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear you can add the system duration field to the other tabs

Any updates on this? Why is it so hard to add the Duration field from the Gantt view to the List view? The field already exists, so why not make it available in List view?

While I love the Gantt chat and I am so happy that this was introduced, I mainly work out of the list view. Having to go to the Gantt view just to see the duration is annoying and if I try to create a custom Duration field in my list via the formula, it’s out by 1 day.

So please either improve the formula feature, so that I can have create the correct Duration or make the already existing Duration field available in the List view

Updating to considered! We have an active alpha out for duration on list view / task pane and learned a lot. No timeline yet for being generally available, but flagging as something we recognize as a product gap and are actively looking at.

Perhaps you can buy Flowsana and give Phil a lovely retirement.

We love @Phil_Seeman! But you all also deserve this functionality natively within Asana. We’ve successfully made the case to completely overhaul our dependency and time-based view roadmaps (i.e. Timeline, Gantt, Calendar) over the next few quarters. @Connie_Fan is leading the charge here, but delivering a first class duration experience is at the top of our list. It’s almost at the point where this could move from Considered to In Development! We appreciate your patience as we work through how to deliver the right experience for you all :folded_hands:

You can set the due date to have a range. That would give you a duration of sorts.

Welcome to the forum @Lulu_Ughanze !

Yes it would. The thing about this though is that it still is the distance between start date and end date, and not a thing in itself.

The benefit of having duration would mean you’d need less calculation, as you could just go:

  • It needs to be done by {specific_date}
  • I think it’s going to take 8 days
  • I’m going to let Asana figure out when I need to start

I’m assuming of course that the work schedule is being taken into account.

The benefit is amplified if you are planning a series of tasks, as you can let go of the dates for a while when you’re estimating time.

@Garrett_Knoll Now that I think about it, I’m curious if we’d be able to set duration without a start- or due date yet…
