I am new to using Asana at work and stepping into an organization that’s already established its own processes.
We have a Project named Customers in which our content team adds a Task and Subtasks for every new customer we onboard. Some of the subtasks are assigned to other Projects owned by other teams. The templates we have for Customer Content are to be duplicated and edited based on the specifics of the account. However, I have inherited some outliers where I want to add subtasks from our templates under an existing PARENT and I can’t figure out how to do this.
I hope this makes sense and someone here can point me in the right direction.
Hello @anon25763229 ,
So if I correctly understand, you want to add some Subtasks from one of your Task Templates into an existing Task (parent).*
If that’s what you are looking for, the way I would approach it would be
Create a new dummy Task from the Task Template just to get those templated Subtasks created.
Move those newly generated Subtasks from the dummy Task into the correct parent.
You have two ways of creating subtasks from existing tasks
Option 1 - drag and drop a Task into another Task
Option 2 - Move a Subtask into another Task (parent) by using the Convert to → Subtask menu option
- Navigate to the Subtask
- Select the Convert to → Subtask option**
- In the search bar that appears, type in the Task name (parent) you want to move the Subtask into
Does this help?
Cheers,
Rosario
*Please correct the above statement if I have misunderstood and eventually, if possible, without sharing sensitive data, share a screenshot.
** Don’t let you fool by the name of the option; we know it is already a Subtask, but in the wrong parent right now

Yes, thank you! Option 2 wasn’t apparent to me but works like a charm.
I am not sure how I would accomplish drag and drop. Open two Asana instances (our boards and lists are so full it would be hard to find ‘stuff’ for a drag and drop. Or is there something else I am missing.
Glad it helped!
Referring to drag & drop, you want to use it when you have a Task which should be moved into another task and become a subtask. The not-so-intuitive part is point 1 below:
- You need to select first the task where you will drag the other task into
- With the above task selected, now you directly drag & drop into the Subtask section
So if I want to have Task B to become a Subtask of Task A I will do the following:
- Select Task A
- With Task A selected, you will drag & drop Task B into the Subtask section of Task A
Once you do it a couple of times, it’ll make sense
I hope this helps!
