What's the difference between My Task Fields and other fields?

Hi there,

I noticed that when a task is created by another assignee (a project-level member), the position of custom field changes (I’m assuming it’s based on how the other assignee configures it). A task that I (admin) created will show “My Task Fields”. How do I ensure that the position of custom fields is locked? (FYI: I’ve already configured the custom field position in “Show Fields”, “Customize” and saved layout as default.)

Hi Zul,

Some more context would be great- what do you mean by position of the custom field changes?
Are these tasks in the same project?

Welcome, @Zul_Andra1,

You, and only you, will see the My Tasks Fields section if 1) the task is assigned to you, and 2) you have added Custom Fields into your My Tasks. Others will see the same if they do so too–for their own My Tasks.

Otherwise, the order of custom fields is governed by project settings for all concerned.

Hope that helps,

Larry

Thanks for the reply. Here’s the context:

Fields in my task/assigned to me (what I see in task):

  • Field A
  • Field B
  • Field C

Fields in project and organisation (what I see in task):

  • Field A
  • Field B
  • Field C

Fields assigned to another member (what I see in task):

  • Field C
  • Field A
  • Field B

Why are the fields assigned to another member out of position?

@Zul_Andra1,

When you say “fields assigned to another member”–that’s not possible in Asana, so best I can guess is: You mean that the task belongs to multiple projects (is “multi-homed”) and some of these projects have custom fields in them, so any task in the project you’re looking at will show the accumulation of all the multi-homed projects’ custom fields.

When you show a repetition of fields (like Field C three times), that may be because these projects define custom fields locally to those projects instead of sharing them across your organization’s field library which would enable them to appear for this task as a single shared field with the same value across projects.

You can read about that below, and search within that page for “your organization’s field library” specifically:

Hope that helps,

Sorry, it shouldn’t be “fields assigned to another member” it should be “task assigned to another member”.

Yes, almost all task are multi-homed. But all home/projects use the organization’s field library. If I assign a Task X to myself, the fields are in order. But if I choose another assignee for Task X, the fields get jumbled up for some odd reason.

Sorry, @Zul_Andra1, it’s pretty hard to understand and see what’s going on in this manner. Perhaps someone else is better able to help, or you can try support@asana.com.

Are those tasks from the same project?
