Visibility of all Recurring tasks

Hi -

We’re new to Asana, migrating from Basecamp 2. And of course as we dig deeper we’re finding that not everything Asana advertises works as we assumed. We just posted about the lack of 2-way sync for Google Calendar (and the inability to add calendars as files)…and we also want to add our voice here regarding recurring tasks.

For us, recurring tasks help us evaluate upcoming workload. But if the tasks aren’t populating on the calendar in advance then recurring tasks are useless for us. Yes, of course we could manually enter every instance of a recurring task, but then what’s the point?

Please please Asana consider an improvement to your recurring task function - couldn’t you just give users the option to populate all instances through a given date or not?

We love so many other aspects of this app, and we’d like to be able to keep using it…but between Google Calendar issues and the lack of real recurring task functionality, we’re starting to wonder if our switch is premature.

I would also like this to be a main feature. I work with 6 other marketers in my company and need to see what their schedules look like, 30 days out, 60 days out and so forth. I hope this is addressed soon.

Chiming in to the conversation to say that my team also needs this—in fact it has been one of the main reasons we have continued to use Google Calendar over other tools. We were hoping to switch to Asana and leave Google Calendar behind, but now may not do that. My team is often looking ahead, anywhere from two weeks to six months, and not being able to view our recurring tasks far out is potentially a deal-breaker for our team. We haven’t signed up yet for a premium account but we have been hopeful it could work. Having to do workarounds (aka duplicating task input many times over) so that the calendar view shows us our future tasks is an obstacle rather than a solution.

Yes, I agree with everyone. This would be very helpful.

Hi @PedroPablo_Leon! I would suggest you to have a look at this post from Kaitie : Visibility of all Recurring tasks - #2 by Kaitie

Marie, that doesn’t answer the question that this entire thread (and I believe Pablo) is asking. Folks don’t want to see only the next instance of the recurring task after it has been completed. We want a true editorial calendar view - say I publish a blog every Monday and I set that up as a recurring task. We want to see that in the calendar upon first glance, every Monday. Can Asana make this update? Even if there is an option to view this with some sort of switch/option, if it would disrupt users who only want to see after completion. Thank you!

Agree with everyone else.

I like that the “Tasks” view isn’t cluttered, as that is generally used for current planning. But when getting a bigger picture view on the calendar, I need to be able to see ALL tasks in the future, including recurring ones.

Otherwise I may schedule too many things for the first of a future month, forgetting there are many recurring tasks that will be due that day.

Agree with everyone else, it is very important for our team to see all tasks, irrespective of if they are recurring or not. Also it is very time consuming to have to read through all tasks that should be recurring just to ensure they have been set as recurring. Also, hiding recurring tasks makes it impossible to see the expected workload going forward.
This really needs to get sorted. Pretty please

Agree with everyone. Asana would be our favorite choice as project management tool - apart from the handling of recurring tasks in the calendar. This pretty much renders Asana useless for us in planning. The calendar view should rather be a choice made by the user than by the tool.

Would it be possible to get a feedback if this “feature” is being considered? Thanks!

Looks like it’s been a year now. Hope it will be added in the future

@Marie Would it be possible for you please to review the comments since your last reply and comment on whether the (optional) view for recurring tasks in the calendar is something that might be considered in the near future? This would be truly appreciated, thank you.

Agreed. I need to be able to see ALL future recurring tasks as well. I hope this issue gets prioritized soon. Thanks!

Hi @Frida_Morische and apologies for the late reply. I don’t have any update at the moment, but I’m happy to pass these feedbacks on to our Product Team as we’re always looking to improve Asana & your feedback is important. That said I can’t promise that any changes will be put on the product roadmap at that stage. In the meantime, you can keep an eye here for our latest products updates: Asana Release Notes | Product Guide • Asana Product Guide.

To chime in with the general user consensus, our organization also desperately needs this feature. In addition to just being able to visually see this on our calendar, it is a significant weakness that if one week is missed (ex: a social media post), that I won’t see the other upcoming iterations of this task unless I remember to mark it as complete anyway. It doesn’t make for good record keeping in this way either.

Was following up to see if there has been any changes to this? Our organization really needs to be able to see recurring tasks on our calendar as well. I really hope to see this feature added soon if it hasn’t already.

Same for my organization. The ability to automatically see recurring tasks and subtasks in the calendar view is essential. I recently started an editorial calendar and I’d like a complete look ahead of the repeated content I’m planning. Any update on the progress from the Asana team of this feature would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve just signed us up to ASANA as premium users.I’m working on a 12 month US team project plan and need to send it to my boss in Australia for approval next week.
I need to plan out the year and show recurring monthly events on the calendar for multiple tasks inside a single project.I noted in the tips that “your calendar will only display the next occurance of a recurring task” and have read all the comments here.
Therefore it will look like we arent doing anything for the rest of the year.!!!
I need to display for example our monthly team meetings and monthly market share updates etc,how can I do this please?I need urgent help.

Hi @belinda_brennan - We hear you on this one and appreciate your and the group’s feedback. Due to the current functionality of the project, if you need to display long term recurring tasks, I recommend that you display them in your list view. Or, if absolutely necessary to view as a calendar, you could make multiple copies of the task and place each on the calendar with the due date required. It would be rather manual, but it’s a workaround that would allow you to view things in calendar format.
