Hello all!
It would be great if the Capacity Plan allowed the use of Project Roles (like in Templates) instead of having to use actual users. The reason is because it is intended to be a hypothetical planning tool - so users might not yet be assigned the job yet… but we want to template out the capacity that it would take per role.
As a side note - loving the new update on the Capacity Plan that allows us to toggle between 2 views, planning by Project, planning by User

This has my vote! A client asked for this the other day and makes total sense

The need to assign work, and see workload and capacity, to roles (or non-people) is absolutely critical in my world. Are there any tips/tricks on workarounds anyone is using?
Hi everyone,
I’m happy to announce we just rolled out the ability to see Project Roles in Capacity Plans!
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions or feedback

@Emily_Roman I don’t think this update really addresses this product feedback to use roles “instead of” actual users so the capacity planning feature can serve as a “hypothetical planning tool - so users might not yet be assigned the job”. I would similarly really like to be able to build out allocations for placeholder roles instead of just for actual people. (And also for placeholder projects for work we are scoping!)

A trick we utilize is a guest account for a role…We monitor the guest accounts workload and then switch to an actual person when needed.
I agree with @Caroline_Marks, the feature implemented seems largely unrelated to the feature described in the OP. My organization would certainly benefit from the feature as described, but we’re not even really able to make use of the implemented feature.
Your role assignment will only show up in the capacity plan if you’ve joined a project (which by default means you’ll get notifications for it) and been assigned a role on it; it doesn’t allow you to prospectively assess what-ifs, like “what if person X were to be in role Y for project Z over some period of time, how would that affect their planned workload?” That is also not what’s described in the OP, but would be useful for us; currently when we add a person to a project in the capacity plan, we just have to maintain a shared understanding of what role that person will be playing.
