Hey everyone,
We’re hitting a snag with time tracking in Asana. We’ve moved from Clockify to keep everything centralized, but reporting on time spent per project within a specific month is proving tricky.
Here’s the issue:
- Asana’s time tracking is task-specific; it doesn’t have a separate “start time” and “end time” for the tracked hours.
- We need to answer the question: “How much time was spent on this project this month?”
- Neither task assignment date nor due date accurately reflect when the work was actually done.
Has anyone cracked this nut? Any workarounds or custom fields that might help?
We’re open to any suggestions!
Thanks in advance,
Wiktor!

Hi,
Did you know that as soon as you add Actual time as the Y axis, it unlocks “Based on time tracked date” for the X-axis?

That’s actually super helpful. It seems like there’s metadata in the data model for ‘time tracked date’ - it’s a shame we can’t use this or see it in the interface, API, or anywhere else bar the visualisations here.
Do you know whether this worked on time tracked start date, end date, or entered date? For example, say:
- I use the time track feature on Monday, and log 15 minutes. I’m assuming that will be attributed to 15 minutes on Monday worked on the task.
- I complete the task on Monday.
- I notice that I actually used slightly more time to complete the task, so I use the ‘enter time’ feature on Tuesday, and log 15 minutes.
I need to test this, but I’m assuming that 15 minutes will be attributed to Monday, and 15 to Tuesday, whereas the reality is 30 minutes on the Monday.
I hope you see where I’m coming from. This is a decent short-term solution, but if we’re doing monthly reports to customers, we need to know where our numbers came from.
It is definitely there, see image
I encourage you to run tests indeed, even us Forum Leaders often tests before answering.
