Template Timeline Not Transferring to New Project

Hi – I carefully calculated a 365 day project template; however, when I attempt to create a new project from the template, the timeline doesn’t transfer. Instead, my milestones move, and I end up with 5-6 months extra. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong, but in an attempt to find what’s causing the disruption I discovered that when I use the template to create a new project and when prompted to put in the start date, the template automatically tacks on an extra 5-6 months. Should be 365 days exactly.

Hi @anon26799045

You may want to reach out to support@asana.com.

Your end date will be the last due date found in your tasks. So your start day is what you set, the end date is based on last task due. If there is still an error, reach out to support.

Thanks for your response @Getz_Pro. None of my tasks or subtasks are past 365 days after start date. Not sure where the extra 5-6 months are coming from. Reached out to support.

If you can report back on the end result, @anon26799045, we are interested to hear, as we are all learning the ins and outs of the new templates. Thanks!

@anon26799045 - this has happened to me before and, while this may not solve your current issue, hopefully it will help.

When it happened to me, it was because I had 1 little hiding task or subtask that had an accidental incorrect date, either very early, before all the other tasks, or very late, far after all the other tasks. That will cause the date range to shift dramatically because it’s accounting for that task as part of the template.

The way I solved it was to do the following:

  1. Click the three dots at the top right of the source project (the project from which you made the template) and click “Search this project”
  2. Don’t add any search criteria. Just click search.
  3. Click “Sort” at the top right and choose to sort by due date.

This will show all tasks and subtasks in the project, sorted by due date, and if their are incorrectly dated task outliers, easily spot them.

If that’s not the issue, support may be able to help further.
