Suggestion: Bring Back Inline Email Commenting for Gmail/Asana

I’ve noticed that the ability to comment on tasks directly from email (via the inline reply box) has been removed. This feature was a huge time-saver in my workflow, and its removal has added unnecessary friction.

Please consider re-implementing or allowing users to opt out of the new version. It was one of Asana’s best productivity features.

I don’t believe it was removed, but sometimes for some reasons it doesn’t display…

I reached out Asana support directly as I thought it may have been a tech issue for myself but they said that they’ll be removing this feature (see below). I’d be happy to be proven wrong

Thank you for getting back to me and for sending some screenshots.

I was able to further check on this and due to an upcoming change that we are gradually rolling out to our users at this time, this is expected behavior at this time. Regrettably, we do not have a way to disable this feature for users in the test range. However, I would be happy to submit your feedback on this feature to our product team internally.

Additionally, you can also submit feedback and vote for existing feature requests in our Community Forum where you can create a forum account and be automatically notified as soon as product updates are announced.

They are not saying it is being removed though, probably just fixing something

Here are two screenshots taken one month apart.

In the first screenshot (1 May 2025), there used to be a comment box in the email that allowed me to reply directly without opening Asana. That box is no longer visible. The “Reply in Asana” button may have always been there alongside the comment box — I’m not certain — but what’s definitely new is the line stating:

“Registered Asana users can reply directly to this email to comment.”

That messaging wasn’t previously included.

In the second screenshot (30 May 2025), neither the comment box, Reply in Asana button, nor the new email-reply text is present at all.

I’m not sure if it’s a setting that’s been undone but I can’t seem to find any instructions or troubleshooting, other than what support advised. I would be really grateful if you could share a solution if you know. THank you!

Welcome, @Elysia_Raphael,

Don’t forget to click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the Vote button (as I just did); that’s the quickest and most effective way to express your support for a request.

@Forum-team, Would you be able to find out more about this change? Also, when a long-standing feature is removed, even if only temporarily or for certain users, it’s important for us to get warning of this–even more important than notification of new features added.

Thanks,

Larry

Hello @Elysia_Raphael, @lpb, and @Bastien_Siebman - I was able to look further into this and it appears that there was an ongoing bug that has since been fixed as of yesterday. Please let me know if you run into this issue again!

I’ve just checked some Asana emails from yesterday’s workday – I still see the same issue that I’ve been facing. Is there anything required to sync/connect it again?

Hello @Devon_Peterson and @Elysia_Raphael - Thank you for giving me an update. Let me escalate this as a bug that is still happening.

Hi Alex, I’m wondering if there’s an update on the bug? or something that I’m supposed to do on my end? - I still don’t have the ability to reply to Asana comments within Gmail.

The feature has been sunsetted.
“we may consider bringing this feature back in the future, if there is high demand
we hear you / your opinion, and would love a survey etc. about why this is a useful feature to you etc. and what you use it for / why your workflow uses it”

Thank you kindly. Our company is happy to complete any survey. This function was used daily by my team and its removal has affected our productivity. Appreciate the notification

adding my vote to bring this back!
