Setting subtasks with relative due dates to parent task due date

How can I set a subtask due date relative to the due date of the parent task that runs WHEN the parent task is created? I set up the following rule, but the subtask due dates don’t actually get assigned.

Here’s a screenshot of the rule with the relative due date task open:

Here is the same screenshot but showing all the subtasks it’s supposed to populate. You can see that they all have a relative due date rule set for them:

When I reached out to Asana support, they replied with the following:

"Reviewing the parent task and subtask, I can confirm that what you’re experiencing is expected behavior. This is because the due date must already be set on the parent task before the rule begins to run. Otherwise, the subtask’s due date will not populate. So if the rule starts to run before a due date is assigned, the subtask will not inherit a due date.

In this case, you may need to either manually set the due date on your subtask, restructure your existing rule, or create a new rule to ensure a due date is added to your subtask."

Can anyone advise me on how to accomplish having subtasks populate the relative due dates correctly?

@Bethany_Guinee,

Change your existing rule to 1) remove the subtask date setting part, and 2) also move the parent task to another section, like “Needs subtask due dates.”

Add a whole new rule:

  • When: Added to “Needs subtask due dates” (and maybe other When or If to target the correct tasks)
  • Do this: Move your date-setting logic here instead of the first rule.

I didn’t test but this approach has been confirmed to work in similar situations.

Larry
