I am trying to figure out a way to see any time a task is tagged. We reference other tasks by tagging them in the description or in a comment and I need a way to be able to see whenever a particular task is tagged (@ mentioned). How do I do this?

I know that this doesn’t solve your need to search for existing tasks that have already been tagged, but moving forward you may want to consider reference custom fields.

Asana automatically keeps a log of these @mentions. Near the bottom of a task’s detail pane, make sure the All activity tab is showing (just clicking it once will set it that way as a default for you) and then look at the fine print:
Unfortunately, that isn’t a solution for us in our use case.
