Reporting & Asana Categories

Hi all-

My team uses a variety of custom fields to allow us to report out on the work we do in a coherent way. My question is if when you select a custom field for an entire project, from the portfolio view, if that then applies the selected custom field to every task within the project for reporting purposes. Or, does each task within the project need to have that custom field selected as well to show up in a task report?

For example-

In portfolio, I select “Community” as a custom field for a project. When I pull a report for all tasks utilizing the “Community” custom field, will it collect all tasks within a project with that designation? Or do I need to go into each task in that project and mark as “Community?”

Thanks in advance for the feedback and help!

Welcome, @Makenna_Homer,

You can add custom fields in two ways:

  1. At the portfolio level which means that each project in the portfolio can have its own value for that field, e.g., for a field like Budget $, and
  2. At the project level, which means that each task in the project can have its own value for that field, e.g., for a field like Estimated Time.

So to answer your question, it sounds like you need #2 since you want to set custom fields for tasks.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi there,

Thanks for your response. I’m aware that you can add custom fields in those ways and have implemented at both levels. What I’m wondering is if I have a value in a custom field from the project level, if I run a report on tasks under that custom field, will tasks from that project show up in the report?

Thanks,

Makenna

If I understand what you’re asking, the answer is no.

But I recommend you set up a test; I think you can answer that question in a couple minutes.

Thanks,

Larry
