Recurring tasks no longer working?

Recurring tasks no longer seem to be working consistently in my projects.

Some tasks repeat as they always have but many do not. I cannot quite figure out a pattern as to which ones are repeating and not. Some of the repeating tasks (but not all) are tasks that Ive had on repeat for more than a decade (so there many instances of them). I tried both 1) Deleting 9 years of the old instances (just saving 2025 ones) and 2) creating a new repeating task altogether. But even starting from scratch, some of the tasks are not recurring once I mark the old ones complete (I know to CMD-R etc and even have waited more than 24 hrs to see if the next instance happens to pop back up but the ones that are not recurring just seem to die). Any ideas for workarounds? The inconsistency here is really challenging because I depend on these instances to remind to do various things that must be accomplished periodically. Thanks.

This must be frustrating. I’m afraid I haven’t heard other reports, and I’ve not had a problem and use them daily.

Also, there should be no need to refresh the browser nor wait more than around ten seconds much less 24 hours.

I think your best bet is: Try these troubleshooting steps (in particular the incognito mode w/o extensions if you’re using a browser), then please create a support ticket: see How to contact our Support Team.

Thanks, Larry. I got a msg today from Asana that says “Could not copy your task” and the link provided goes to the latest task that is not continuing to repeat. Im just going to try and create a fully new instance of the task and see if it’s just that these are decade+ recurring tasks.

I’d encourage you to follow the steps I mentioned before, and report this message with exact text, and maybe you can learn the cause.

I thought you said you already tried it with new task instances and those too experienced problems?

Ive tried to be much more deliberate in the last week. Im still not sure I have a clear picture of the pattern, but here is what I see happening:

  • With one caveat (below), all the tasks that are failing to repeat are ones that were imported when the personal space was deprecated.
  • Some of these tasks repeat as always, some do not. I cannot figure out a pattern.
  • Sometimes I get a “cannot copy task” message, sometimes I do not even when the repeat fails.
  • If I create a new task with the exact same string (“Generate quarterly TPS report”) that new task seems to fail to repeat, although this is not 100%.
  • If I create a new task with a clearly different string (“Create quarterly TPS report”) that new task (so far) seems to be repeating as expected/usual.

I was confused because when I said previously “some new tasks were not repeating” I hadnt really recognized that all the “new tasks” that were failing had the same task names. This seems odd to me, but so far, my workaround to “create a new repeating task with a slightly different task name than the failed to repeat task” seems to be onerous but more reliable.

Also, FWIW, I do often see repeated tasks fail to appear immediately, especially in the Asana Android app. I wait, refresh, etc. and the new instance of the repeated task does not appear. If I kill the app (ie, force stop) usually the reload will cause the new instance to appear. I do not have this issue on the browser version on my desktop, where instances appear more or less immediately in most cases.
