Project templates V2: what we gain, what we lose

Disappointing to be honest. The fact that we’re now forced to use these new templates that have so much missing from the previous version and are now inconsistent with many of our previous projects.

For the volume of projects we create and manage, manually duplicating projects or manually adding dashboards is not feasible.

Really hoping more of your list of what’s missing is addressed soon.

Losing features like this was the reason why I created the thread in the first place, I agree. The forced migration was premature.

Really need this one to be fixed. Not being able to automate a message to a Teams/Slack team from a template is a big hold up

I can’t believe we still can’t duplicate a task in a template. @Bastien_Siebman for your list of the things we lost, what do you think, should grumpy users like me be opening individual topics when we run into one that is really causing pain? I don’t want to spam the forum but it would be nice to have a place to vote for the ones we think are the most important.

Ideally we want one thread for each topic, and my post here can link to the thread.

We can’t set firm due dates, nor can we set up recurring tasks in the new project templates. Everything we do is dependent on those two things

Interesting, I never thought of that!

Does anyone know if Asana is actively developing against Templates. I’ve read through this entire thread and see almost no enhancements to Templates V2 in over 9 months.

@David_Dunst we don’t know, and because the roadmap isn’t public, it is hard to say.

Very disappointing as I’ve sold my company on Asana as a solution, but the lost functionality in Templates puts a significant damper on our solution. Specifically the inability to Duplicate a Task. Seems like such a simple ask. Could this be done via scripted API calls?

Sorry, Asana doesn’t have any type of scripting language or capability.

Asana has API capability though, so it’s just a matter of what programming language someone wanted to use to make a series of API calls, right?
Or am I misunderstanding Asana’s capabilities?

Well, no - there are two issues here:

  1. What you’re describing would I think require responding to a user’s interaction with the UI - i.e. select a task and then choose to duplicate it - and the Asana API has no such UI capabilities (you could write a Chrome extension but that’s not officially supported and might well break any time they update their UI); and
  2. The Asana API currently has no support for accessing tasks within a Project Template (I’ve been pushing them hard to add this to the API but it’s not likely to happen any time soon).

Aargh, can’t tell you how frustrating that is. Love how intuitive the GUI interface is, but so disappointed in how they’ve chosen to handle the back end.

Still waiting on app integrations, specifically Google Drive.

If the app is integrated into the template I plan on linking documents in Google Drive that clients need to complete.

Then I can use the template to start a project per client upon signup.

Upvoting for dashboards to be carried over in project templates pls!

We’d love to be able to copy dashboards from a template, but it appears that this feature was deleted sometime last year. Any updates on when this might be available again?

Are there any updates on reinstating V1 functionality?
Is there anyone from Asana in this thread who can advise on this? E.g. @Nao_Kumazaki ?

Same question here, we were working on a new process set-up for a while which included App integration rules. With the V2 version, this is not transferable to a template anymore. So our deadline is at risk. It would be amazing to get an update on this  Thanks!

@Bastien_Siebman, thanks for this list of template capabilities. I see it is from last year and I haven’t seen something more recent that is so thorough. Is the list still accurate?
