Preview of an email uploaded like an attachment

I think It would be great to have a preview of an email uploaded like an attachment (file “.msg”) in a task as it is the case for a pdf file.
For the moment, we have to download it to read its contains.

Hi @Alain_Terranova, welcome to the Asana Community Forum! Can you confirm how are you uploaded the email? Are you using the Gmail add-on or Outlook add-on?

Hi, I was going to request the same thing.
I currently use the Gmail add-on and it gives me the option to include attachments and the email. However the email only comes through as text and is not formatted. Also any images within the email aren’t attached. Also I am the only one that can click on the email link in the task to see the original email

Hello Emily,

We use Outlook 2016 (Exchange On-Premise) so unfortunately I think, it doesn’t exist an Asana add-on available.
So I upload e-mails doing directly an drag & drop from my Outlook into Asana task webpage…

Thank you for proposing this, @Alain_Terranova!
I have wanted the preview feature for .msg and .eml for a long time too.
They are basically text files, so I don’t think it’s very difficult to implement it.

@Emily_Roman, do you think we can make this topic a feature request in #productfeedback?

Love this suggestion. I often drag n drop emails as attachments in tasks as well (since our IT doesn’t allow for the Outlook add-ins). I don’t always need to download the file. A preview to reference the text is primarily what I need to assist with the completion of the task, a majority of the time. This would be a huge help! I support making this #productfeedback

Thanks @ShunS and @LEGGO! I’ve moved this thread to the #productfeedback category so we can upvote!

Echo the feature request, this seems like it would be a really easy add and would be greatly appreciated.

please !! i really needed this. hate fumbling outlook to search for relevant emails.
couldnt use outlook add-in as well, given strict permissions required by org.

Create the ability to include an email as an .msg attachment when creating an Asana task directly from Outlook using the Outlook Integration to Asana Feature. This way you can open the .msg file and easily forward, reply, reply all, etc. and it will have all of the original email formatting and details. When you add it as a comment in Asana, you lose all of that functionality.

Before Asana, I would copy an email from my Outlook inbox and add it as an .msg file to an event in my Outlook calendar to remind me to follow up with someone at a later date so (a) I didn’t forget and (b) I could delete the email from my Outlook inbox. When the reminder popped up, I could easily open the .msg attachement and reply, reply all, or forward the email with all of the content, formatting, and attachments. I want to be able to use Asana for the same thing but with the current limited ability to only add the email as a comment in Asana, it’s not easy to open and reply or forward the email. I know that I could save the file as a .msg file and then upload the attachment to a task but that is a lot of manual work that defeats the purpose of the Outlook integration. If there is an option to upload the original email as an .msg file instead of (or in addition to) adding it to the comments in the task, that would make this feature even more useful for me and I can abandoned my current Outlook approach and move all of these reminders over into Asana as well.

Hi @Arlene_Goligowski, welcome to the Asana Community Forum :wave:t2:

I’m using the Asana add-In for Outlook,
Can I convert an Email to a task and add the Email as an attached file? (not as a comment)

Hi @Arlene_Goligowski
you absolutely described our situation. And this problem «threatens the adoption» of Asana by our team!
Did you find any solution or workaround so far?

Thank you,

@Rebecca_McGrath any follow up from your team?

.msg and .eml are file formats. We want to be able to attach files of this format to an Asana task, and SOMEHOW, ANYHOW be able to view the contents of those attachments with significantly fewer clicks than it takes to select the destination folder for saving the file, navigating to that folder with the file manager, and opening the dedicated program from there. That’s all we request. Everything about Google Mail integration, Outlook integration etc. is a red herring. We just want desktop integration.
