Any updates on this “start date” trigger FR? Thank you.
There seems to be no option to create rules based on when a task starts, only based off the due date.
Not sure if anyone else would use this, but I would like to have a project automatically created from a task in our promotions planning board 3 months prior to the start date. Our promotions can last from 1 day to 3 months, so the due date won’t work!

Thank you Larry!
We used to have the ability to work off of start dates, and create a rule for them. Asana removed this featured (for Premium at least) a few years back. It was one of the reasons we were considering leaving Asana. Then they also changed up the color palette. These significant changes led us to reduce our Asana users significantly. Wish they would bring it back.
I don’t believe that was ever the case, actually. I don’t believe Asana removed anything like that.
Update: I’m wrong! See correction below.
Thanks,
Larry
I promise you, at one point we had the ability to use Start Dates as a way to bring Tasks into the Today section. It was a long time ago, actually maybe before Rules existed. I do remember it being part of the old system (the one that didn’t need rules). The whole triage method was different back then too. Either way, we miss it.
Yes it was the case in My Tasks V1, when rules were not available in that view. Task autopromotion was using start dates.
I’m so sorry, @Cat_B, and thanks for corroborating, @Julien_RENAUD.
I’m only confident of one thing at this point: My memory sucks!!
Thanks again,
Larry
Would love to use a rule based on a start date that we are getting slack messages that a tasks is starting by today!
I was hoping to create a rule to support the “Getting Things Done” principle of having a task sort of ‘disappear’ until its Start Date comes, so you don’t have to keep revisiting a task that isn’t ready to start yet.
So I went to create a custom rule that says when a Start Date is added and the date is in the future, move it down to some sort of Waiting section. And then when the start date arrives, move it into the Inbox section. But when I go to create the custom rule, the Start Date field isn’t available as a trigger field. Is there another way to accomplish this?

Any news on that? This feature would make it so much easier for me to plan work for me and my team. And I just don’t understand why this is not implemented. It makes much more sense that a longer taks can get triggered by its start date than by its due date. (I dont want to start working on a tasks on the last day but on the first day of its duration…). Is this a design decision (and if yes, what are the thoughts behind it?) or due to technical limitations?
Hi all,
I’d like to use rule for due date and start date do store the inital information into a custom field, when start date or due date were changed. So I could calculate the amount of delays for each task. Right now, I can only choose a number of days in the future. Is it planned to extend the function shortly?
Thank you
Matthias
Asana (like many of its competitors) does not comment on unreleased features, so there won’t be any news or updates unless/until a feature like this is released.
Hi all, it’s a bit unrelated, but I’d like to announce that there’s a new trigger “Start date is changed”.
This is rolled out to 100% of users.
If we could please have the same rules and filters in the dashboard for the start date, as we do for the due date, it would be of tremendous value for automating some of our processes.
I see this thread is almost three years old, so I do not have high hopes for a speedy resolution, but wanted to add a +1 to the request here.
Thank you.
I am echoing the most recent commenter. I don’t expect anything tangible to come, but I’m adding a comment.
I only noticed this when I had Rules set up based on “Due date approaching.” I’ll try the Flowsana workaround which was mentioned above, but we really shouldn’t have to depend on 3rd party integrations when the core functionality was available in My Tasks V1.
I’d also like to add my voice to Devin’s requirement. Rules based on start date is significantly more useful than due date. Templated tasks often have different durations so trying to drive section / status changes off due date is nearly impossible.
Essentially if a start date is approaching the task should automatically become active/live/in progress.
I agree! This would be much more helpful to have start date highlighted or triggered or something.
