Microsoft 365 Copilot connection with Asana

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to use Microsoft 365 Copilot with a private Asana project.

Current situation:

  • Project visibility: Private
  • I am the Project Admin
  • The project opens normally in the Asana web application.
  • The Asana connection appears as connected in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • When Copilot attempts to access the project through the Asana integration/API, it returns “Not Authorized”.

What I have already verified:

  • Correct project ID
  • Correct user account
  • Project is accessible in Asana
  • Asana is connected to Copilot
  • No issues accessing the project directly through the Asana UI

My questions:

  1. Can Microsoft 365 Copilot access private Asana projects?
  2. Are there any additional permissions required for private projects?
  3. Does the project need to be shared with a team or organization rather than being private?
  4. Has anyone successfully used Microsoft 365 Copilot with private Asana projects?
  5. Is there a way to verify whether an external integration has API access to a specific project?

Rune

Hi @Rune_Haarberg, since you can open the project directly in Asana, this sounds more like an authorization issue between Microsoft 365 Copilot and Asana’s integration/API access rather than a problem with the project ID itself.

I’d recommend reconnecting Asana in Copilot, confirming the connected account is the same Asana user with access to the private project, checking any admin/app restrictions, and testing against a non-private project to isolate whether private visibility is the issue. If it still returns “Not Authorized,” I’d raise it with Microsoft or Asana Support to confirm whether the Copilot connector supports private projects and what permissions it requires.
