When do a blank advanced search for messages, I get a limited results:
If I then proceed to filter these messages, I get a lot more results:
This doesn’t make any sense, as filtered results should be a sub-set of unfiltered results.
Tested one account in browser, tested another account in desktop app. Same results.

While testing I did notice it appears the blank search results seem to be filtered by author != me
So when I filter by author = me the results seem to have zero overlap.
Support has since escalated this case for further investigation.
