Lost "Color By Sections" Option on Gantt Charts

Recently, I have noticed there is no longer an option to color the gantt chart by Sections. The only options that are available are Theme Color, Priority, Task Complexity, and Risk Level. Coloring by Theme makes the whole gantt chart a single color. Assigning tasks Priority, Complexity, or Risk is not very applicable with my team’s use, but each team member is responsible for a different section. Can the option for default colors by Section be reimplemented?

Hi @Pete_Pavek , welcome to the forum

I also noticed this earlier today! Not sure why Asana has retracted this feature or whether it’s an A/B test. Perhaps the @Forum-team can shed some light?

Hi @Pete_Pavek

To the best of my knowledge, no changes have been made to this feature, so this seems to be a bug. While it doesn’t appear to be critical, I recommend reaching out to our customer support team. They can attempt to reproduce the issue under the same conditions and assist you in finding a resolution.

Thanks for flagging @Richard_Sather

Hi @Julio_V , I’m not sure I agree with this being deemed non-critical. Any time Asana retracts a feature, I would deem that critical based on the likelihood that it will break a customer’s workflows or affect the way they used to use their projects until now.

Displaying the colours by Section was useful for some of my clients who are understandably not happy now with this being migrated to ‘Theme colour’, i.e. one colour for all tasks, based on the colour of the project’s icon.

Can we understand if this is a bug and this feature is ever coming back? If not, clients would need to recreate their Sections in a single-select custom field which they can colour code as they like.

I’m wondering if Asana has done this because, as of recent, we can now Group Gantt views with a single-select or multi-select field? Could you check that with the PM?

Hi @Richard_Sather ,

First, I want to acknowledge your frustration and apologize if my previous message gave the impression that this issue wasn’t important—that was not my intention.

I’m afraid we are not aware of any intended changes to this feature in Gantt charts, which is why I suggested it might be a bug.

My comment regarding the bug not being critical referred specifically to our guidelines for determining the severity of a bug, which you can find here. It was not meant to downplay how this issue might affect you or the user who raised the concern. We understand that all bugs are important, but their criticality and how we handle them in the forum, depends on factors such as the scope of impact and whether they are reproducible across multiple accounts or workspaces.

That said, we will also investigate internally to ensure no recent changes have unintentionally deactivated this functionality in Gantt charts. We will keep you posted on this thread If we find any information.

Apologies for any misunderstanding, and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Hi @Julio_V , thanks for your response, I was sure those were your intentions and thanks once again for your support!

Looking forward on what you find out from the team, internally.

We are having the same issue. If it’s a bug, i suppose it’s global, and live.

any news?
having the same problem.
It’s starting to get irritating with no solution in sight.

I am having the sane issue…

Hi @eoez , @Keno_Nitsche , welcome to the forum.

For what it’s worth, the current workaround is this:

You would then need to set the value of that field to correspond to each section those tasks are in.

Then go to the Gantt view options to set the colour by the single-select field.

When is this going to be fixed? I use this on all of my projects.
