Introducing Swimlanes on Board - Create rows to organize your kanban workflows!

Hi Asana community,

We’re thrilled to announce that Swimlanes are now rolling out in Board view! You can now organize your tasks both vertically and horizontally by grouping them into rows using sections, assignees, or single-select custom fields.

Swimlanes unlock powerful two-dimensional organization, helping you manage complex projects more effectively:

  • Better visual organization: Separate different workstreams, team members, or priorities into distinct rows
  • Improved daily standups: Easily review progress by assignee or project area
  • Reduced board clutter: Keep related tasks grouped together for cleaner project views
  • Enhanced project management: Ideal for managing multiple epics, sprints, or client work simultaneously

You’ll also notice a refreshed board canvas with more pronounced columns, designed to improve navigation when using both rows and columns.

FAQ

Q: Which fields can I use to create swimlanes?
A: You can group tasks into rows using sections, assignees, and single-select custom fields. More options may come in the future based on your feedback!

Q: Where can I find this feature?
A: In your Board view settings on both Projects and My Tasks, you’ll now see options to group by both columns and rows.

Q: Will this work with hide empty groups?
A: Yes! Just like our existing Group By functionality, you can hide empty groups for a cleaner view.

We can’t wait to see how you use Swimlanes to bring more structure and visibility to your workflows. Special thanks for all community members who advocated for this feature in the Forum

This feature is already a good start

But what would also be very helpful would be if the swimlanes were the parent tasks and the underlying subtasks were the tasks that you see on the board in the lanes.

Seeing subtasks in swimlanes would be great!

@Emily_Roman - still waiting for swimlanes on my primary org. On another of my orgs, I do now have them on my projects. However, not in My Tasks (which is where I’ve been waiting to use them!). Are they definitely supposed to be available in My Tasks? If so, I seem to have an issue.

EDIT: My apologies, it looks like this was “operator error” and all is good.

Hi @Phil_Seeman, thanks for reporting this! We are gradually rolling out swimlanes on board view and it’s currently only available to 50% of customers. My understanding is that we are launching it on both Projects and My Tasks but let me double check with our product team

@Emily_Roman do you have an estimated date when this will be rolled out to everyone? We still don’t have it in our organization.

Great feature update, we really our company really needs this.

@Phil_Seeman I can already see the swimlanes on MyTasks in the board view of a client’s org, so it should work out fine. They are not yet available in my own organization either.

@Daniel_Kreiss That’s good to hear you see it in My Tasks. Still it’s odd that I have it in an org in projects but not in My Tasks; that means it’s been rolled out to that org, so it’s puzzling.

Can I filter on only the swimlane?
For example, I have a field called Priority, it has P1, P2 and P3 tasks in it but I only want to see P1 tasks in the swimlane and then my ‘normal’ tasks as per usual underneath?

And then ideally another swimlane with any tasks ‘on hold’, so we don’t have to keep a separate column

Thank you! I love working via the Board section, this will help visualize better.

hi, I’m still not seeing this new feature available, and will be very helpful. is the update still being pushed? or anything I’m missing or need to do?

Hi @Melvin_Halfin , welcome to the forum :waving_hand:
Try clicking on the Group by button in the top right. You should see the possibility to add a subgroup.
If not, try refreshing your browser or restarting your desktop app.

Thanks, I tried restarting the app and browser with no luck.
I have the subgroup option but not in the Board view

Hi everyone, thanks for your patience! We just launched swimlanes on board to customers on Starter, Advanced, Enterprise and Enterprise+ plans! :tada:

Let us know if you have any questions or feedback!

@Emily_Roman - not sure if others are encountering this, but I think there might be a bug with this when using single-select column as one of the groups:

Thanks for the heads up @Stephen_Li! This has been escalated to our product team :folded_hands:

@Emily_Roman now add Views per swimlane. Maybe I want a Board view for my top swimlane, but List view for the lane below, and Calendar for the lane below that. This would help to replicate the flexibility that apps like Notion offer.
