Indicator to show new activity (icon or bold task name)

I’ve dozens of customers and hundreds of ASAN projects to follow!
I’ve email notification on task interactions, 'cause ASANA Inbox is really to limited (I still wrote about it).

My request is to set an icon (or a highlight) on the rows of the single tasks, to alert that there’s an unread comment or some unread comments.
It may work based when:

  • there’s a comment not by me I don’t reply
  • I set “unread” the tasks

The notification may disappear when:

  • I reply to the comment
  • I set “read” the task

Thanks

Have a great Wednesday!

Thank you so much and sorry if I didn’t see this thread before.
It has a lot of vote and comment: I hope ASANA may implement this feature, that has a really few dev cost!!!

2021 - Any update on making the little comment bubble filled in for unread comments?

@Emily_Roman this request has 29 votes. How many are needed before it is decided to add this feature?

Hello @Ibrahim_Farah and welcome to the Asana Community Forum

There is no specific number that is needed. The Asana team is always monitoring this forum and they are aware about popular feedback requests  They not only check the total votes but also the total views of a feedback request thread.

Since Asana does not have a public roadmap I cannot tell if and when this will be implemented.

However, what I can say is that Asana has always been and is constantly listening to their customers and implementing new features. Just have a look at all the features they launched in the last few months and also last year, which includes well-requested ones from the forum

Please create this feature!!! It is so archaic to not have an indictor that there are new messages in the projects. This should be a standard in the industry!!

It would be very nice to see some indicator that there is an update in a message that you haven’t read yet.

This red dot would show that someone wrote new messages in that task. Maybe if someone mentions you, it looks different.

Hi,

@Rebecca_McGrath I suggest merging with Make tasks with unread updates bold in task view what do you think?

We are an engineering team at Bytedance Inc. We use asana not only for project management but also for task tracking. It would be super useful if task with unread updates(comments, tag change, etc) can be shown on top and in bold in ‘My Tasks’, like Gmail or the internal task tool of Facebook. Inbox is good, but when there are lots of tasks and you can’t process them all at once, it would be quite possible to loss track on some of them.

Hi @Zhongyu_Wang and thanks for sharing your feedback with us! We haven’t planned to implement this in the near future, but we will keep it in mind when we take another stab at notifications. In the meantime, we’d recommend relying on your Inbox to follow-up on updates

I like this idea. But what does unread mean?

You can view a Task update by looking at the Task directly, the Asana Inbox, and by an e-mail notification.
If I get an e-mail notification that I may or may not of read (Asana has no way of knowing) is the Task unread?

Hi Vince,

what we expect is “unread” = “i haven’t read it on asana webise”, regardless of email status.

we have a lot of tasks on a project dashboard and we need a clearer sign whether i have read this task instead of unread emails in my mailbox. i often click through an email into asana website and read other tasks after i read the one the email guide me to. In such cases i can’t rely on email for task read status.

I’ve noticed a few other posts about this going back a couple of years. This is something I’d love to see happen. Going through the inbox with multiple tasks and ongoing conversations can be maddening. It’s easier just to see what tasks have new comments to read and go directly do them.

I too would like to see this happen.
It seems there is a task for this here: Indicator to show new activity (icon or bold task name) - #4 by Fiona_Hankinson
I have upvoted there

Slack makes a great example of how I’d like to see this work.
In Asana, it seems like the default notification method is via email. It’s a bit rigorous. I might be working in Asana, get an email notification from Asana, switch to email to read it, then have to switch back to Asana either to continue what I was doing, or respond to the new activity.
With Slack, I get a notification sound from Slack’s tab in my browser. If I’m not already working in that tab, when I open that tab, I can immediately locate new activity.

Less rigorous, but also less reliable, is switching Asana notifications from email to browser. As a Windows/Chrome user, this amounts to receiving an email-like pop-up notification over the task bar, and recent Asana notifications collect in Windows’ notification area.

Welcome, @Greg_Feneis,

I actually think Asana’s behavior is closer to what you like about Slack that you’re indicating.

All Asana browser tab titles have a :black_circle: when you have (new) unread notifications. The Asana Inbox is the place to see and most easily process all of these.

Thanks,

Larry

It’s a pain to rely solely on the Inbox and other external notification methods to learn of changes to a task. Visually, it would be so helpful to have a badge (or badges) show up on a task if: a message has been received; a due date has changed; there is an @-mention, or any number of other changes have been made. If a task were flagged that way, I would know immediately to go in and check it, saving a lot of time.
