Importing Subtasks from Excel into Asana – Need Help!

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to import tasks from an Excel spreadsheet into an existing Asana main task, but I’m running into an issue where subtasks are not coming in properly.

My Setup:
I’m using the Scrum framework, and my tasks are structured like this:

  • Main Task: Design Flyer
    • Subtask: Collect Assets
    • Subtask: Design Icons

Issues I’m Facing:

  1. Subtasks aren’t importing correctly – they don’t appear under their respective parent tasks.
  2. Tasks default to the “Incoming Requests” section** – I’d like them to go straight to the Story section instead.

Has anyone successfully imported subtasks? If so, could you share a template or best practices for structuring the Excel file to ensure subtasks are linked to their parent tasks?

Appreciate any help!

Thanks!

@Francis_Yanga,

Have you read and followed the detailed Asana Help Center topics on importing a CSV? They specify how to import subtasks successfully.

For moving imported tasks, you’d want to have rules in place to accomplish this.

Also, may I move this topic out of this private category so 800k+ others can benefit from it?

Thanks,

Larry

@lpb Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I will try it out to see if it works for me. Yes this can be moved.

Thanks, and done!

Wondering if you can import sub tasks to an existing Parent Task.

I’m afraid not; you can import subtasks to a parent task in the same csv file that precedes the subtasks only.

Thanks,

Larry
