Lookup fields are a new Asana feature that come as part of the new Tables functionality.
Here’s how to create a lookup field and how they work:
STEP 1:
A lookup field pulls values from a particular field (column) in a Table. Here I have a Customer table and I created a field called Address:
STEP 2:
Once you have your Table, next create a Reference field which references that Table, like this:
STEP 3:
Once you have a Reference field which maps to that table, next create a Lookup field which references the Reference field from Step 2 and a field in that table, like this:
STEP 4:
Now you can add both the Customer Record reference field and the Customer Address lookup field to a project:
USING A REFERENCE AND LOOKUP FIELD:
Now, whenever you select a particular customer using the Customer Record reference field, Asana will automatically look up and fill in the Customer Address lookup field, as shown here:

Thanks for your work.
I found another way to create a lookup field.
It might be more intuitive.

Good find, @Tetsuo_Kawakami! That would replace Step 3 in my instructions above. (Also, only works if one has the project in List view.)

On my end, it also works in the table’s list view.
Yes, understood and good point. What I meant was that it’s not available in other project views (Board view, etc.).

Hi @Phil_Seeman , thank you.
I was able to access the table following your instructions.
By the way, I have a question: I can’t access the column with the name of the table I’m referencing. Am I misunderstanding something?
You have to create the column (custom field); that’s Step 2 above. Did you do that?

I’m doing some testing.
Currently in testing status.
It seems to be working reasonably well.
1 - Table
2 - Project
It seems that a lookup field chooses the first match only when a reference field has some elements.
