LookUp - Custom Field Type

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed a new “Lookup” custom field option in Asana and was trying to understand how it works and where it can be useful.

While testing it, I initially saw that the Look field requires a reference field. I added a reference field, but I’m now getting the message:

“Unavailable fields, requires a single source and container.”

I’m not fully clear on what source and container mean in this context, or what configuration is required for the Look field to become available.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

  • What exactly is the Lookup custom field designed to do?

  • What type of reference field needs to be configured before using it?

  • What does “single source and container” mean?

  • What are some practical use cases for this field?

  • How is it different from simply using a standard custom field or reference field?

  • Does it allow us to dynamically display information from another task/project/object based on the referenced record? For example, if I have a reference field pointing to another task/project, can the Look field be used to display selected information from that referenced item automatically?

If anyone has experimented with this feature or has documentation/examples showing the intended setup, it would be really helpful to understand how to configure it and what value it adds in real-world workflows.

Thanks!

Hi @Bhumika_Bihani , is it easy for you to share a screenshot? Curious to see what you are seeing in the Service Management app

this is what i am getting this while configuring in Asana Platform

This is a case of a new Asana feature that, while it has not gotten announced or formally rolled out yet, is I see being used already in the Asana Service Management product (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was also part of the new Command product as well). So it’s a bit of awkward timing.

I will check with the forum team to see if I’m allowed to explain this in more detail here, or not yet.

Thanks Phill

It’s available in the asana-client-management product as well, albeit it’s not working there either. It seems this may have been hastily rolled out before everything else it depends on was ready. Not sure.
