I’ve searched, but I was wondering if there is a way to associate an Asana task with a Gmail tag so that when I send an email associated with that tag the content goes into Asana for documentary purposes for team members who will be working on the project down the road.

Look into Zapier maybe.
Another idea would be to set up filters in your inbox and then actions for those.
Meaning any emails that go into a specific folder based on the filter are automatically forwarded to Asana also.
