we are using the portfolio function to track client activity so each client is given a portfolio and then all related project for that client go in their portfolio. This means that when a new client portfolio gets set up I want all of the team to be able to access it as there could be multiple projects across departments. Is there a way of allowing new public portfolios to automatically share to all the team?

Good question, it would indeed make sense everyone sees portfolios if they are public. Because by default they are public, and everyone can find a portfolio by using the search!
Hi @anon71615195, welcome to the Asana Community Forum, and thanks for sharing your feedback with us! As it stands, for a portfolio to be visible by other users, you need to first share it by sending the link or adding members. We don’t have immediate plans to make public Portfolios accessible to all Organization members but our team is aware of this feedback and hopefully we can implement it in the future! In the meantime, you can upvote for this option here: Search/Find Public portfolios
