We use sub-projects such as backlog, dev, staging and production to represent which state they’re in. It’d be nice at a glace to be able to see which tasks I have in which state.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback! It is currently possible to show which project(s) a task is living in in your My Tasks.
To enable this, you will need to go to Customize and toggle Projects on.
If this is not what you are referring to, could you please provide a little more detail of what you would like to see so that we can be sure we understand your request fully? 
Yep I get that. This isn’t about project but “sub-project” as stated in the title.
