Facilitate backups to external storage

Hi Everyone

The idea is to ensure that organisations always have copies of their critical data without having to rely on a 3rd party intermediary to extract the data from Asana.

Even the most basic version of this I could think of (automating the current CSV export Project feature) would be incredibly useful.

Thank you!

This is not an exact solution to your request, but FYI at the Enterprise and Enterprise+ subscription levels, it’s possible to do a complete organization export via the Asana API, meaning it could be automated to occur on a regular basis.

Hi @Phil_Seeman - thanks for flagging this. I had noticed it originally but it felt a bit out of budget/capability.

Just out of interest, in your experience as a Partner, our orgs with Enterprise/+ subscriptions either already implementing your suggestion, or are generally capable of doing so if they wanted to? If so, it makes more sense to me why this isn’t a native feature.

Not that I’m aware of, @AnAsanaUser. I could be wrong but I think it’s more of a trust in Asana that they aren’t going away and will have your data. @Bastien_Siebman @lpb anything to add?

Just want to make sure you’re aware that this is an extremely limited subset of your data. First, it’s only projects, and it’s not all of their content even.

I’m sure some orgs do backups, but I would guess just a small percentage.

Thanks,

Larry

The biggest company, on Enterprise plan, leverage the integration with Theta Lake for example to backup. (that’s my understanding at least)

Note: Not a solution but marked as such to elevate a key reply

Thanks @lpb. I guess my priority is to not lose my tasks - everything starts with those core objects. More complex versions of a backup solution could target all the other useful data in Asana.

@Phil_Seeman I can definitely appreciate trusting Asana: no doubt they make serious efforts to safeguard data. It just seems counterintuitive to everything we’re told about data protection to trust it to one cloud vendor. It will probably seem obvious in hindsight that people should backup their data elsewhere if Asana ever has a problem. A comparison could be OneDrive - I trust MSFT, but I still include my OneDrive folder when doing local backups of my desktop.

I have just noticed you don’t need the API to do a full org. export - Asana offer this to Enterprise + users from their org. settings. I suppose my request is actually that this be expanded to other subscription tiers.

Thanks @Bastien_Siebman - I hadn’t heard of Theta Lake before.

@AnAsanaUser, I’ve made a note on your post that clarifes your request and offers the current capabilities and marked it so it appears at the top for the benefit of others.

Thanks for adding that info,

Larry

Right! I focused on the API since you mentioned automating and the settings export can’t be automated. But yes, it could certainly be done manually periodically.
