Enable Messaging for “Comment-Only” Members

Description
Currently, “Comment-Only” members in Asana can only reply to existing messages but cannot initiate new ones. This limitation can hinder effective communication, especially in scenarios where they need to provide updates or raise concerns outside of task comments. We rely on “Comment-Only” permissions for clients to ensure they cannot edit tasks or disrupt workflows, but still allow them to communicate effectively within the platform.

Proposed Solution
Allow “Comment-Only” members to send new messages by either:

  1. Providing a dedicated “Send Message” button in the messaging interface.
  2. Adding a permission toggle for admins to enable messaging for “Comment-Only” members.

Benefits

  • Maintains the integrity of project workflows by restricting clients from editing tasks.

  • Enhances communication without compromising permissions.

  • Reduces dependency on higher-permission users for initiating discussions.

  • Promotes a more collaborative and client-friendly environment.

Thank you for considering this feature!

I didn’t realise this was a restriction. Good call @Cyrill !

Sending a message is basically a comment on a project. Makes sense to allow this.

I’d understand that maybe a Status update would require editor access.

If it does become a choice instead of a change I’d advocate for the default to be to allow this.
