This is the answer I got from the built in AI tool when I asked for “rule to adjust all tasks in a project when the start date of the the project changes”
*Unfortunately, this type of rule isn’t currently supported through Asana’s automation system. Asana doesn’t have a built-in trigger for “project start date changes” or an action to automatically shift all task dates proportionally.

My use case is in project portfolio management, and I would like to be able to move projects around in a portfolio timeline view to balance workloads, etc.
It seems like a missing feature that would be very helpful and make the use of project portfolios even more useful
I did not see a feature request for this to add my vote to, so I figured I would post this. Admins, if this is a dupe, please merge as appropriate.
I did find posts suggesting Flowsana could support this use case, but that is not really an option for us given pp pricing and the size of our organization.
Hi @Mike_Hoefer , I feel this might be a duplicate of the below linked thread, but you mention that you want to move projects in the portfolio’s timeline… so is the expectation when you do that to auto adjust the due dates of tasks within the project? Or the other way around? i.e. if tasks due dates in the project change, then reflect that in the priject due dates displayed in the portfolio?
It seems that in the current architecture/data model, there is no real relation between Project Start/End and the Start/End Dates of the items within.
They are the same in that
The OP is asking for “dynamic” project start/end dates based on the start/end dates of the task within.
I am looking for “dynamic” task start/end dates that move with the start/end of the project
While settings in a project template allow you to set the due date for Milestone 1 to 14 days after the Project Start Date. Once the project is created from the template, that relationship is lost, and Milestone 1 is fixed based on the project’s original start date, not the revised start date.
Hi: I’m so eager for Asana to close their functionality gap that prevents tasks due dates from being auto-updated based on a project’s overall due date. We have projects with hundreds of tasks and have invested time in setting those tasks up in our templates with relative due dates - all tied to the project’s due date. But: when a project’s due date shifts, we currently have to manually edit ALL of our task due dates. I’ve tried highlighting / dragging / moving tasks in the timeline view but it’s so clunky and imprecise! I also tried setting up an AI rule, but Asana’s AI admitted it can’t edit task due dates. Most recently, I tried creating a Task Management AI Teammate who also woefully admitted it couldn’t change task due dates. I know others have requested this feedback before and I’m really curious why Asana hasn’t made this happen! It would save my team an enormous amount of time.
Don’t forget to click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the Vote button; that’s the quickest and most effective way to express your support for a request.
Not to negate your request, but until/if it is implemented…
Would changing the +/- zoom level (weeks, months, quarters, etc.) help with this? And are you lasooing the set of tasks by left click and hold down while moving to the end of the range to select?
Alternatively, do you use dependencies between tasks and do a date change for the ending task; an option is offered to change upstream dates, and there’s a choice of what to do with slack between dates.
Thanks Larry! I have tried zooming out and lassoing the tasks, but with hundreds of tasks across 10+ sections the entire experience is clunky. I need to scroll down to capture all of the tasks in 1 go and the page doesn’t scroll while you lasso.
I occasionally use dependencies between tasks, but my real use case is when the project’s date changes.
I have spent time setting up our template with task due dates relative to the project’s overall due date. In my perfect world, I could change the project’s overall due date and each of the hundreds of tasks with a relative date (“due X days before project due date”) would change automagically. I’m not sure why Asana lets you set a project due date with dependent tasks if you can’t then manage that date.
