I need to update the due date for tasks that have dependencies, but the “Update” button in the due date box is missing. some of the tasks I need to update are subtasks so they are not visible in timeline view. All the conditions for auto-shifting to work are met, so I cant figure out why the “update” button does not appear.
@Emanuelle_Klachky - the “Update” button only shows up if the task is blocking other tasks or subtasks.
Could you check and see if the task or subtask you are referring to is blocking any other tasks (via dependencies)?
Yes, it is blocking another task - attaching pictures showing dependencies and the update button missing. this is just one example.
@Emanuelle_Klachky - I’d suggest testing it from another browser, another computer, or an incognito window, to make sure it’s not a browser extension or some other browser issue.
If the blocked tasks are incomplete, have dates and are connected via dependencies, and your current task has a date, the update button should definitely be showing.
At this point, I’d suggest contacting Asana support. You can give them the link to this post.
How to contact the Asana support team:
(FYI: I don’t work for Asana. I’m just replying to try to help you.)
To create a support ticket:
- Please go to help.asana.com
- Click the chat icon at the bottom right
- Type “ticket”
- Click “No, I’d like to make a ticket”
- Click “Something Else”
- Click “Create a support ticket.”

Welcome, @Emanuelle_Klachky,
Is there any chance for this project that your Dependency options are set to None like this:
If so, you’ll never see the blue Update button when changing dates; you need to choose Maintain buffer or Consume buffer instead.
Note that since Asana replaced the “…” menu in List view with an Options menu, Manage dependencies has moved from there to the Project actions menu.
Thanks,
Larry
Thanks, Bryan. I’ve submitted a ticket and am communicating with support, but so far they have not resolved this.
This project is set to consume buffer, so this is not the reason… I also tried using different browsers and the app with no success.
It’s good that you’re working with support; that’s best given the circumstances. Best wishes…
I am in the same boat @Emanuelle_Klachky, I have a preview button but no update button. Furthermore changing a date will push both previous and upcoming tasks. Did you get a solution on this ?
I will contact support myself now to find out.
Edit: Some staff still have it whilst others don’t.
Hi Jonathan,
What I discovered is that for the “update” button to appear, you need to be looking at the task from within the project page itself. i.e., if you’re opening the tasklist from your “my tasks” page, for example, then it will not appear.
hope this helps!
Thanks @Emanuelle_Klachky, it makes no difference for me, definitely only tested this from the Project page itself. I tested with 7 different accounts looking at the same project and some get the Update and some get the preview. I also tried different browsers and App.
I can’t put my finger on it, I’ll see what Asana says.
