A few things:

now that we have automations, you have some great new potential to do very useful stuff like have a date field that would fill when a task is moved into “in progress” - which of course I have to set up using another field since there is no concept of workflow status natively in Asana. But this gives you outstanding capability to see a Project’s progress by doing things like setting a due date, then tracking the actual “start date” as you can fill in the date field when a task actually starts. I’m sure some great developers like @Phil_Seeman could go crazy with this capability. Phil by the way already has a great workaround with using text fields for basically date/time values in his excellent tool Flowsana, which is not intuitive and caused me some confusion until I realized the limitation is with the Custom Field types in Asana.

This is one of the more disappointing fails by you guys at Asana. I read thoroughly this post, and all of New Custom Fields shelved. It’s nice that @Joe_Trollo jumped in and spoke a bit, but this is not up to par for you guys. I don’t mean to be obnoxious, but you’re about to file for an IPO, about as high-flying as they come, and yet you lag behind all other competitors in this regard, and there doesn’t appear much effort to fix this. It begs the question, as a lot of other people point out here in the forum, as to what you are putting effort into in Product. There should be more of a tie in between what’s here upvoted in the Forum, and what you guys are actually working on with all your developer might, and that is very hard to discern. Whether it’s tech debt or whatever the reason development of a lot of basics go slow, this type of limitation is making me hesitate during my current trial of Asana. I was highly surprised in the first place to see your Custom Fields so limited in the first place, when no other tool I am looking at seriously has near this little development of such a key feature in Work Management apps nowadays. At the very least it would be great to see you guys trying to get one new Field out the door. All the more that you went so far as to announce this was coming 18 month ago! And the worst thing is you guys have now gone dark as to any further guidance. You stepped up and put in the work to get the ability to switch to Board view done, which was another huge area you lagged behind all competitors, and I’d expect similar with this glaring weakness of Asana. Instead we have radio silence and growing voices of dissatisfaction here in the forum.
If I do sign up for Asana, I will keep my fingers crossed you guys will deliver this. So much lost benefit of your Automations as long as you have such barebones choices in your Custom Fields…
