The recently launched custom ID field is great, but having tried it out, it appears it is currently not possible to sort by an ID field within a project’s list view or board view. 
Hoping this will be added as a quick follow-up, soon! 
PS: In the meantime, the current workaround is to sort by creation date.
Totally agree, just realised as have started using the field type in some projects - bizarre, you cannot sort by it!!
It would be helpful to have the option to sort by ID. Since the IDs are numbered, it would allow us to view the list in ascending or descending order.

Just added my vote here. Awkward functionality gap for sure.
The other awkward (IMHO) gap is no ability to have ID’s at the project level for display & use in project portfolios.
