Unfortunately, currently, Asana does not support ‘unassigned’ as a filter in dashboards.
However, native Asana Rules actually do!
So you could create a single-select field with two options for ‘Assigned’ and ‘Unassigned’, like this:
and then have a rule to adjust that field accordingly. It would look like this:
You could then use this field in a dashboard’s chart, like this:
But since you want to see it by category and only unassigned tasks, you would set the X-axis to the custom field of your ‘specific category’ and then add a filter to only show the unassigned tasks from the ‘Assignee status’ custom field, which we created above, like this:
